"I'm on to you," he teases. "You're always tops in my book anyway, not to worry."
It was nice that among units that didn't trust each other, or were too busy screwing each other senseless, that a few of them could find a comfortable sense of home with each other.
"Ok, I'm finally done for the new guy. Time to grab a late dinner. You wanna come with?"
"Course I do. The usual diner, or chinese delivery? My vote's for the diner. I'm thinking pancakes."
She finishes the backrub with a quick scratch of his head, ruffling his hair. It is nice, especially for those of them that never really had that sense of home. And even if it doesn't last, for that little while...well. Better to have had, right?
He doesn't even squawk at the hair ruffle. Turning smartly, Tuck offers her his arm. "Then what are we waiting for? Chocolate chip pancakes with extra bacon and syrup it is. My treat."
Most folks in their line of work didn't have much family, but that was okay. It was safer. And in the place of blood family, they sort of made their own. Not permanent, but enough to get them through with some sense of happiness and that's what mattered.
