Yes.

...

Define "friends."

What are dictionaries for?

Someone that likes you and you like back. A mutually-beneficial, platonic relationship. Whose company you can keep without it ending in unmitigated disaster.

Then I can unequivocally say "yes."

Often when you people say "friends," for some reason what you actually mean is "someone-whom-I-trust-with-my-life-and-who-will-soon-betray-me." I still don't understand why anyone would want those.

What an interesting turn of phrase. I may have to rephrase my question.

Have you ever had a friend that hasn't betrayed you?

Reply

tearinhalf August 29 2011, 10:27:26 UTC
Yes. [He continues to regard you with disfavor.]

[King's possibly being more annoying by smiling.]

Do tell me about them, darling.

[Remember King: he's being forced to answer honestly. Nothing is stopping him from punching you. D<]

Marian--one of the other scientists. We got along well together, and enjoyed chatting. I saw her recently, and we still got along.

[That's something he doesn't remember while out and about in the 'real' world, let alone in memeville.]

Oh. One whole friend. That's sweet.

Do you suspect she'll betray you someday? At the back of your mind, you know...

[He shrugs.] I'm choosy about the company I keep.

And no, I don't. I'd have to trust her for that. No lasting relationship is built on trust.

Can't fault that, I suppose.

Do you really think you have to trust someone for them to betray you?

tearinhalf August 29 2011, 10:50:18 UTC
Of course. It's hardly betrayal if you expect them to work against you--that's nothing personal. It's only betrayal if you trust them to not do so.

Ergo, there's no-one that you trust.

How's that going for you? Making you happy, is it?

I believe that's a point I've been hammering home to everyone I've met recently. Did you not get that memo?

Should it? It's not making me unhappy either. It's just the way those of us with intelligence live.

You've been hammering it home outside of a forced-honesty zone, yes. I'm just checking.

It's not making you unhappy either: you're basically breaking even. What kind of an existence is that?
