I rolled an 8, if that is okay?overbraveFebruary 5 2012, 01:12:11 UTC
[So, they hadn't meant to land themselves in the middle of a World War. The Doctor had promised her excitement, so, surely, she cannot object to this new development. Melody is surprised to see that the atmosphere at the camp is lively, but generally optimistic. Having strayed from her companion to do some exploration, mostly to visit the horses, she pauses, a dreamy look suddenly spreading over her face.]
An 8 is perfect! c:mutedconfidenceFebruary 5 2012, 02:13:02 UTC
[Jim certainly didn't bland into the background with his uniform, but he did quite well for someone keeping to themselves. He's sitting on a stack of hay, infront of an empty stable, hunched slightly over a small book. The movements for his pencil are either too long or too short for writing and the way he keeps looking back to some of the horses might've indicated he was sketching them.
Needless to say, when the woman walked into the stables, he doesn't notice her. Not just yet; she's just out of his peripheral. It was when she spoke up that he startled, his eyes quickly moving to her. ...Just what was she doing at the base?]
Well, of course I do. It's been coming from the officer's tents all day. [Jim stands, setting his book and pencil where he sat before taking a few careful, but confident, steps towards her.] Are you lost, miss? I can escort you to the guards, they can take you back to town or wherever it is you need to be.
Oh, marvelous! /sigh of reliefoverbraveFebruary 5 2012, 02:23:30 UTC
[Melody looks up at him in her sudden haze; thankfully, she isn't too out of place this time, having insisted on dressing in the fashion of the time - a simple blue dress, cinched at the waist with a brown belt. Other than that, a woman at an army base must be startling, and she doesn't have the Doctor around to provide explanations.
Her smile turns dreamy, swaying a little to the music, a soft smile on her face] I'm not lost at all. Dance with me first, please?
Oh, don't be silly, there's no need to be worried~mutedconfidenceFebruary 5 2012, 03:40:30 UTC
[She does look fitting! Perhaps a bit off in his eye, not that he could pinpoint a particular thing, but fitting indeed. In her clothing that was, which was why he asked her if she need assistance. Though her answer to his question throws him off a bit. How is it she isn't lost? A wife of one of the officers?
Jim's thought is interrupted by her question, however, and his brow raises in surprise.] My, you're a rather bold one, aren't you? [He replies in a chuckle, though it's clear he isn't offended or put off by her inquiry in the least. In another moment Jim nods as he offers his hand, palm up.] May I have this dance?
B'aww, just wanted to make sure my post made ~some sense! Glad it does! <3overbraveFebruary 5 2012, 04:00:47 UTC
[Something weird about a time traveling TARDIS child? Now, that's just silly. She has the air of a seasoned traveller for someone so young - well, not so young, but far too young to be wandering around such a place on her own.
She laughs, covering her mouth as she does, but with an insisting nod of her head.] Bold? I'm not - I honestly just want to -- Oh, blimey, I'd love a dance with you. [Immediately (and blushingly), she takes his hand, setting the other on his shoulder. That's correct, isn't it? Melody's usual style tends to be of the flailing arms like a lunatic variety. Still, you pick up a things here and there, and often they are useful. ]
Of course it does <3mutedconfidenceFebruary 5 2012, 10:30:40 UTC
[She does seem to have something about her, Jim notices. A confidence, somewhat flustered, but mature for a young lady. It wasn't something he saw much and, honestly, it was a bit refreshing. Still concerning, of course, that she was wondering around by herself.
Jim only smiles at her reaction, keeping his stance even as she stammers somewhat. When she takes his hand, he grips his around hers gently, his other hand placed at her waist. Yes, she was doing just fine. Waiting a moment for the music to key up, Jim slowly started to lead her in a simple and slow waltz.] So. What is a beautiful young lady doing in a place like this? Visiting a husband, perhaps? Or a fiancé?
[If Captain Nicholls met her companion, he might find him more worrisome than the lady herself. Chances are, he's probably making more trouble than she is. Maybe.
Oh, he's so very gentlemanly, isn't he? Melody finds that refreshing, what with all those rude men back home where no one ever holds a door open for a girl anymore. Once he starts to lead, it takes a moment for her to stop watching her feet, but she eventually looks up at him, a smile on her face.] Beautiful --! Ah, I'm with the Doctor. He's come to have a look around.
[Her smile turns bashful and she shakes her head.] No husband, beau, or fiancé.
[It isn't hard for him to see she's watching their feet with him being as tall as he is ans he can't help but think she hasn't danced too much like this. But that was just fine, he didn't plan on taking the dance faster anyway. And that smile on Jim grows a bit more, followed with a chortle, when she herself smiles and exclaims.
But, oh, she was with a doctor? And she wasn't attached to him in any way.] I see, then you're his accompanying nurse. Though I don't recall the medical inspection being planed for today. [He pauses only for a moment.] No matter, our facilities are spick and span.
[When he hears a trill coming up in the song, Jim steps back a bit to gently twirl Melody where she stood. Once she's facing him again, he assumes their previous stance and smiles down to her.] I never got your name. I'm Captain Jim Nicholls.
Right, I am The Nurse. [She hides a chuckle there. She doesn't suppose that's a Time Lord title, but she'll pretend.] I assure you that everything seems to be in working condition! Very good, yes.
[As she's twirled, Melody spins around with some sense of grace that surprises even her, and she gives a surprised little laugh as she returns to his previous position, smiling up at him. Blimey, is he tall.] I am Melody Pond, Captain, at your service. {And a polite nod, flicking her fringe away from her face.]
It's quite a pleasure to meet you, ah, dancing among the horses. Sorry, I must've interrupted something you were doing here!
[Jim gives her a somewhat quirky little smile at the reply.] Splendid. I'm sure the medical staff was thrilled. [And really that reflected well on all of them here at the base.
And he laughs aloud when she spins around so smoothly, rather impressed with her since she seemed so skittish about their dancing at first. But it only made his smile that much stronger when they went back to their slow dance.] A pleasure to meet you as well, Miss Melody. If there's anything you and the good doctor need feel free to ask, I'll see what I can do.
[He shook his head after, however, at her apology.] You weren't interrupting a thing. I was just... relaxing before I have to go back on duty. [No, he wasn't going to admit he was drawing; that wasn't exactly one of the more popular traits of an officer.]
I doubt we will be needing much else, but - [She shoots him a rather impish smile. If he doesn't much mind her boldness, she'll make another request:] I might return for one more dance if we are leaving soon, depending on outside conditions, f'course.
[Melody doesn't question it, and certainly did not notice him drawing, though she would have appreciated to know such a thing about him. She is fond of those creative types, after all, and is clearly already fond of him within the few minutes they've known each other.]
[That smile of hers makes his brow raise up again, a small flustered grin finding his own face. Jim ducks his head slightly, keeping his chuckle to himself before looking back to her.] Well I've got roughly another hour and a half before I'm back to work. If you're leaving after that... I can't see why I can't take a break around then. [Officers still got breaks after all.
But, an officer and a nurse meeting in the stables? Really, this shouldn't have been as much a thrill as it was. Jim really couldn't figure out why, but it was. Maybe he was just getting caught up because they hadn't gotten orders yet and were anxiously waiting. Melody's question weakens his smile some. It's saddened now, though a smile is still clearly there as he slows the dance to a stop.
Letting his hand move from her waist, Jim pointed to the empty stable he was sitting in front of earlier.] That's my stable. I haven't found my horse yet. Or it hasn't found me, [He solemnly laughed.] I haven't quite figured out how that works works yet.
[Melody can't help but feel good that she's put that flustered grin on his face somehow, and makes a note to find him before they leave. But she doesn't want to think about leaving right now, not when they are dancing - right, dancing. She remembers to keep her step, lighter on her feet.
At once, her brow furrows when he starts to talk about the horses and she glances towards his empty stable before looking back at the captain apologetically.] They should be finding your horse soon. I expect that they're still making purchases, right?
Shame, though, I would've liked to meet your horse. That's okay. [Melody reaches to give his cheek a gentle, reassuring pat.] The right steed'll come to you eventually.
[She should feel proud at getting him to make that look, it wasn't one he pulled out for just anyone. Especially for a girl that was only passing through with her doctor. There was a good chance they weren't going to see one another again, he shouldn't have been letting himself feel like this, but it felt good to have a bit of fun.
He gives an apologetic look, however, when they stop dancing. Jim could tell she was enjoying herself. It was a small shake of his head at her estimation.] It's our responsibility to find our own horses. At least until a certain time, which is in about a week. Then they'll send me a stock horse.
[Jim chuckles at the pat on his cheek, reaching a hand up to take hers in his.] A shame you aren't staying with us. We're going to be passing through a town in a few days. They have a market there, I'm told, where they sell fine horses. [He had a good feeling about that place.] But even though I can't show you my horse, I can introduce you to Topthorn. [He smiles, leading her over to the stable next to his where

[Melody is the sort of person who likes others easily; as one travels through all of space and time, it isn't uncommon for Melody to make a friend, only to lose them moments later. She is barely twenty, but so accustomed to the heartbreak that comes with being a Doctor's companion. Never numbed, though, she continues to open up to others.]
Oh, please, I'd love to meet him.
[She gives his hand a squeeze. Captain Nicholls, for instance, is someone she's taken a liking to instantly. That cheery, slightly goofy smile on her face hasn't left, after all (he is so very handsome). Her heart may as well have skipped a beat when he takes her hand to lead her to the stunning Tophorn. ]
Oh, pretty thing, you are. [she coos softly, waiting (hesitating, really. She isn't used to horses.) until Tophorn turns his noble head to look at her. She giggles over at Jim and reaches to lightly stroke the horse's snout.] You need to have a horse as kind as you are, Captain.
