"If you are truly one of the Underground, you've a description of me. You know I just made it out of Japan. And you know I have a way of killing our Lord and Master." She spit out the last four words as if they were acid.
With the key around her neck, she was invisible again, and she knew enough physical combat now to know she could take him out if she caught him by surprise. Then she'd run. Provided he was UCF of course.
Martha was underestimating Sam. There was no way that she had picked up enough phyiscal combat in one year in the road to overpower a guy twice her size who had been fighting demons since childhood. Still.
"Yes, of course I know all that. You're traveling the globe to get the pieces of some weapon, I know the whole story."
At that moment, she heard the unmistakable sound of a sphere. "Down!" she hissed grabbing his arm as she dropped. They wouldn't see her... but they'd definitely see him.
Martha rolled on top of Sam and fumbled with the string around her neck. "Stay still," she hissed as she managed to loop it over his head. She was stuck now cheek pressed against his to keep the string from biting either of them too badly.
Sam's skin was crawling as soon as the perception filter was hauled over him. It felt like cockroaches under his skin, and he knew what that felt like, literally. He shivered.
Martha stayed absolutely still until the sound of the spheres disappeared. Then she waited a minute or two more before she came back to life. She removed the filter from Sam's neck with a whispered apology. "Back to base?" she suggested, as if nothing had hapened.
The nature of their very short relationship had changed the moment Martha had hid him from the Spheres. She walked next to Sam now rather than behind him.
"What's your name then? I'm not used to members of the Underground being unable to find me. But I'll admit, I got a little lost in the endless cornfields. Haven't been to a shelter in days."
"Right then Sam... not used to aliens I take it. And yes, London is rather devoid of either corn or wheat. Or mountains. Or deserts... Really most of the American landscape so far."
"Well, first thing you need to know, not all of them are... like this. They're like humans. Some are good, some aren't. Sadly, your first memorable experience with them is this. But the places I've been... some of them are really wonderful."
Sam shrugged. Maybe there was some wonderful out in the universe somewhere. He'd never been able to find any here on Earth. "Anything's possible," he told her.

"And the cornfields are murder if you aren't used to him. Don't have a lot where you're from, huh?"

She walked in silence for a small way then asked another question. "What did you do before this?"
