Hope this is alright! Recognition isn't necessary. mmorstan January 25 2012, 01:14:17 UTC
[It was a good day for grocery shopping. It was a good day for anything, actually. Eco-friendly shopping bag over her shoulder, she wanders along the streets of London, opting to take a detour. It was rare nowadays to see the sun shining so brightly and she decides to wander into the park for a brisk walk through. ]

Of course it is! On both accounts~. Rolled a 3! fuckirene January 25 2012, 02:40:49 UTC
[Oh goodness. Things were just never in his favor, were they? He wasn't sure what happened to him but what he was sure of was the panic that ran through him from the fact that he couldn't hear a blasted thing. No matter what he did, cleaning out his ears, yawning to pop them; nothing.

So it was no surprise that when he jogged around the corner, looking over his shoulder to see the dog that he knew was barking at him yet wasn't making a noise, that he ran into someone. He didn't knock them over, but he bumped their shoulders enough to throw them off balance a bit.

Once Watson caught himself and turned around, somewhat out of breath, he addressed her in a particularly loud tone;] I apologize! My attention wasn't on the path before me! Are you alright?

Aw, yay! I know she's not the Mary he knows, but I couldn't help it. mmorstan January 25 2012, 02:49:23 UTC
[Poor John! Mary is taken completely by surprise at the sudden ambush, stumbling a little; she's a small woman and is moved easily, but she doesn't fall this time. She does, however, have to grab onto his arms to keep upright.

And, oh, he's yelling. She can't help the wince that cross her face, but soon puts on a smile, a genuine one to show that there's no harm done.] No, no, that's okay! I'm fine.

... Are you alright? I should be worried about you, judging from the look on your face.

That's just fine~! It'll be fun to see how things play out fuckirene January 25 2012, 05:27:36 UTC
[He at least does the gentlemanly thing and cup her arms back to make sure she's stabilized before letting go. But why was she cringing? Why couldn't he hear himself? John stood, staring at her in utter confusion, when he still didn't hear anything as she talked.

The only thing he could do was stare at her mouth and replay the motions in his mind. 'No', 'okay'... He tilted an ear towards her, thinking that would help somehow. It didn't, of course, and he cleared his throat lightly.

His voice was still loud.] Excuse me? I didn't quite catch that! [No that was not a flush of embarrassment, it was from all that jogging as evident from his shortness of breath.]

Yes, I agree! mmorstan January 25 2012, 06:27:06 UTC
[It takes Mary a moment, just a moment, to realize what is happening to this man. Or, what has happened to this man. Her brow furrows deeper and she gives his arms a little squeeze. Raising one hand, palm flat, she indicates a level, slowly lowering it, her chin sort of mirroring this motion.]

You can't hear anything properly. [And she repeats the gesture twice before pointing to her mouth, then to his ear.] Nothing.

[She shakes her head, unsure how else to put it.]

[John only watched her in continuing curiosity after she grips his arms. That flush that had only been minor before was a bit more visible, making him duck his head slightly as he chuckled lightly. That hand motion meant he was yelling, wasn't he? There was just no telling for him if he were talking too loudly or at all. If he felt enough of a strain on his vocal cords, he thought he was doing something right.] Sorry, [He nearly muttered.

He looked up in time to see her point to her mouth, then his ear before shaking her head. In reply John's mouth scrunched up, brow slipped down and even his eyes looked a bit sad before he slowly shook his own hand.] Not a thing.

[At least he was talking quieter, though it was loud whisper.]

[Mary's eyes widen at that moment and she frowns, mirroring the sad expression in his eyes. She points to herself, making sure to exaggerate every syllable coming out of her mouth.]

Do you - [Here, she points to him, then to herself.] Need my help? Help. My help.

[It must look silly, she realizes, but she has no other way of really communicating with him in the middle of the street.]

[Despite that saddened look, Watson pays close attention to her movements, his brow furrowing slightly as he connected them with actual words in his mind. But his chest tightened at 'help'. Oh, he easily recognized that word.

In spite of haunting memories of the past, after a moment, John slowly nodded his head.] I would hate to be a burden to a charming woman, but would you walk me home?

[It wasn't as if he couldn't see but the mere shock of suddenly not hearing anything anymore made him understandable uneasy. Even with a stranger (thank goodness she was kind), Watson at least felt a bit calmer since he wasn't alone.]

I would be happy to help. [She presses her hand to her heart, nodding once.

Gently, ever so gently, she takes his arm, giving it a reassuring squeeze, wanting him to know that as long as he is with her, he will be alright.] Is this okay? [She gestures to him, then her arm through his.]

[A small, kindly smile grew under Watson's mustache at her gesture. How lucky was he to run into such a caring person? So far he'd only run into weary on-lookers. And as if a nod in return wasn't enough to answer her question, John hooked his arm around hers like any decent gentleman would.

Before they started heading out of the park, Watson held up his free hand to her in a stopping motion before pointing in the direction they needed to head in. It was getting a little harder for him to talk but he still managed.] It isn't too far, just Baker street.

Baker Street, got it.

[The fact that he was so gentlemanly under such duress makes her smile a little, chuckling under her breath. She looks away, walking on, making sure they are headed in the right direction. It certainly isn't every day one runs into a man who has lost his hearing, but she remains calm. Surely there is some explanation for this. An explosion, or something like that. Surely, he can find his hearing again.]

[Watson wasn't so sure about that. Their walk had given him more time to think about it, and there wasn't a case he'd seen where someone suddenly lost their hearing, with no real trauma to speak of, and got their hearing back. What was even more odd to think was that more people got their hearing back after an accident.

Perhaps those seven minutes of silence were too much for the doctor to be thinking on his own. Then again he didn't have much of a choice, did he? John did, however, feel much more at ease with the woman accompanying him. She was rather calm about all this too, which he greatly appreciated and-that was when he realized he hadn't gotten her name!

When they finally reacted his flat, Watson stopped them just before the stoop and turned to face her.] We never exchanged names. We were both a bit panicked.

[When he speaks, she gasps and has to laugh a little, releasing his arm. She covers her cheeks, still chuckling.]

Oh! Mary Morstan. I'm -- [At this, she pauses a moment and takes his hand, tracing the letters in his palm to at least help him grasp the words.] Mary - Morstan.

And you?

[There was a small chortle from him as well when he saw her laugh. It must have been a little strange to see a deaf man talking.

John's smile quickly disappeared when she introduced herself. That was a name he didn't need spelt out on the palm of this hand (as much as he appreciated it). His brow was again knitted in confusion as he looked to her.]

John Watson.

Is something the --

[At this, she pauses, looking absolutely bewildered. John? No. It couldn't be. Then again, it wasn't as if the name was terribly uncommon, but what were the chances ... ? She tugs on her ear. ]

John.... Watson?

[Watson only chuckles lightly at her reaction to hearing his name, nodding to her in reassurance. He knew it wasn’t a rare name but he could tell it meant something to her too, what, a John Watson meeting a Mary Morstan.

And to prove to her he is who he says he is, instead of trying to simply explain himself, John takes out his passport and opens it to the identification page before presenting it to her. There it was, John Hamish Watson, in plain black ink.]
