Five friends she'd never betray.

1. Evan: They've known each other since they were teeny-tots. Used to throw mud at each other and climb things together, and while they've both gotten older that kind of friendship never really goes away. They won't let it.
2. Elani: On top of being Evan's sister - and therefore qualifying for immediate mothering/big-sistering - she's just so very sweet and kind and good and you can't not like her.
3. Isaac: It's not a conventional relationship by any means but she'll occasionally leave him a tin of whatever she's been baking in a secret location that he pretends not to know about, and he'll occasionally bring her a glass of juice/tea/whatever his beverage of choice for the evening is while they're both doing their night owl thing.
4. Avery: Similar occupations and similar interests are as good a foundation as any to strike up an acquaintance.
5. Cait: Common ground, again. Though they also share an appreciation for good music and good literature and will occasionally talk about either or both over cookies.

Five reasons she was glad to return to the Deck.

1. Family: It's not necessarily about blood, even, though she's quite close to her immediate family as well. However, growing up around such interesting and bizarre characters is bound to leave some kind of lasting impression - and in her case it was far more good than it was bad.
2. Boredom: One thing she learn quite quickly was that there really was such a thing as having too much freedom and as nice as the Outside can be, you just can't beat the Deck when it comes to excitement.
3. Ambition: Hers as much as her family. Her decision to advance, however, was all her own, as was her decision to settle at Seven and effectively drift into semi-obscurity.
4. Relationship: During her travels she might have met a someone. A someone that she came to care a great deal for. Cared enough to stay away for. It ended badly.
5. Plan: With the exception of #4, she'd always intended to come back. Eventually. Her fairly speedy return, however, might have been facilitated by an outside influence.

Wellll, isn't that interesting.

And, for the hell of it, five reasons she wasn't glad?

There seems to be an abundance of tragic histories and secret pasts in this lot. She seems to have a little of both.

Okay, lemme see:

1. The primary reason she left was because she hated what she was becoming - children shouldn't have to become soldiers, after all, regardless of the circumstances. And while this is something she's never quite managed to shake, she found a way to make peace with it while she was away.

2. There is a part of her that'll always lament the lost opportunity for a normal life - of course just what actually constitutes as "normal" is anyone's guess.

3. She has to now deal with her mother's family (old school Diamonds in the worst possible sense of the word) far more than she'd like. Aside from an older brother over in Hearts - who has pretty much been written off as a dead loss and is completely ignored - she's the only member of her family still in the Deck. Which means she gets to have three times the usual dose of familial unpleasantness. Her insistence on screwing with them at every available ( ... )
