River Song was curled up in the nearby armchair, updating her diary on the most recent adventures she had just enjoyed with the Doctor. She kept looking over to him with a fond sort of smile, watching him sleep. She occasionally went back to her diary, adding a few more lines before she coyly looked to the Doctor once again. She finished describing the moment they had jumped from the very top of the Nova Grid tower before she closed her diary, having had enough of writing for one night ( ... )

Eee, River~ shout_geronimo July 16 2011, 23:06:09 UTC
The Doctor, having had a very long and quite wonderful night of dashing about and saving the universe, had been deep asleep. Although he often dreamed of what happened to him, now was not one of those times. Now was the sort of dream where the sleeper in question would later wake up and wonder what the hell was up with their brains. Not the Doctor, however. He loved bizarre dreams; they were always interesting and usually some sort of fun (and he never had to save the world in them, go figure).

Of course, every dream ended, and he awoke with a start and a silly yell - and just in time to see River falling off her chair. Completely unaware of what had just occurred, he grinned at her. "Had a bit too much to drink, did you?" he teased as he stretched, unable to resist having a bit of fun.

River found herself in an uncomfortable heap on the floor, staring up at the Doctor as he grinned down at her with the most frustrating, silly expression ever.

"I hate you!" she chuntered as she climbed back onto her feet, dusting herself off.

"No, you don't!" he told her fondly. "You could never hate me, and you know it." Things had changed between them ever since he learned who she was. He found it a lot easier to banter with her, to tease and joke around. He even felt more at ease, even though he likely shouldn't. "You know," he continued, still wearing that infuriating grin of his, "if you ever feel like you're getting busy, just have a bit of a sit-down. Trust me, you'll feel a lot better."

River shook her head, fighting the smile off her lips.

Too late.

"Damn you," she muttered, finding herself grinning right back at him. She laughed to herself when he remarked that sitting down was apparently a better option, nodding her head in a half-listening, humouring manner. "Oh, yes, of course. A sit-down, rather than a fall-down," she said, taking that as an invitation as she seated herself besides him.

He knew she'd grin back. She always did, in the end, and it was always gratifying. The Doctor sat up. "Well, yes. Rather, wouldn't you say? Mind you, I've fallen down loads of times, so I'm not really one to talk." He'd even wrecked a perfectly good pair of pants at a party with Benjamin Franklin once (and really, he believed the chickens would never stop chasing them then).

"Nice night, though."

Curling her legs beneath her, River smiled at the Doctor, looking him over and entertaining herself with admiring the way his foppish hair now swooshed in contrasting angles over his brow. He looked such a sight, but it made her smile.

"Yes, it was," she agreed at his comment, thinking back over their most recent adventure. Well, they hadn't planned on ending it quite so dangerously. Really, River had been hoping for a nice meal and a stroll through the Electric City of Nova. Instead they'd spent most of their time running, defusing an EMP bomb before the climax that was their leap off the high tower.

Oh, he had sleep hair already. Brilliant. It never took much to mess his hair up, and trying to get a nap in always did the trick. Maybe if he ignored it, River wouldn't notice. "Why do our nights always end like that?" he joked, laughing a little. "You'd think we'd get a nice night off once in awhile." Well, maybe they would. Maybe they had, and he simply hadn't lived through it yet. Either way, he knew better than to ask River.

River smiled slowly at that remark, an expression that was so promising and yet vowed spoilers in every dimple. "Oh, we will do, sweetie. They just don't happen as often as we'd like."

But that was alright. She loved the running too.

"No talk of 'spoilers' this time?" asked the Doctor, playfully imitating River's tone. Honestly, half the time he was so childish was because he found it funny. "At least there's that to look forward to. I suppose I'll keep trying, then." A peaceful night was lovely every so often, and they didn't happen nearly often enough. Still, that's what made the rare bit of peace that did come along all the more precious to him.

"Think we can get away with a promise of a few nights in," said River, her smile spreading in such a way that it was bound to make the Doctor blush. Well, it was something of a spoiler, but not one River kept very well given how often she flirted with him.

She knew him too well. The Doctor sputtered a bit, a blush spreading over his face as he looked at her, wide-eyed as a child. For all his years of being alive, for all that he'd seen, River always managed to throw him off his game. "Oh," he replied, doing his best to sound casual and utterly failing. "I mean... oh. Right. Sure." Another pause. "Okay, then."

River resisted the urge to clap her hands like a giddy teenager. She did love seeing him get all flustered. Instead, she smiled at him widely, all perfect teeth and full lips. There was a naughty glint in her eye that proved just had much she enjoyed it.

"You," the Doctor accused solemnly, complete with poking River's arm, "are cheating.." It wasn't as though he hadn't teased people about their futures before; he'd been especially fond of it in his eighth regeneration. Having the tables turned on him was slightly unpleasant, though that was likely because he couldn't show off to River like he did with everybody else.

Upon being poked at, River chuckled warmly, leaning back slightly as though the poke set her off balance.

"Does that surprise you, Doctor?" she asked mischievously, smiling as she watched his face.

"No," came the reply, which was a little too insistent to be honest, "not at all." The Doctor was glad his messy hair partially obscured his eyes, even if that meant he still looked ridiculous. "Sorry to disappoint."
