As soon as her eyes fall on him, they widen, and she takes a step back.
"It's you."
Okay, Rose. Don't panic. The important thing is not to panic. He said this would happen. Just play it casual, play it cool. She just had to earn his trust and get to the TARDIS.
He's been looking all over for her since he lost sight of her in the marketplace, and for the most part his leads have been dragging him in a circular wild goose chase across the planet. The flood of relief at spotting her probably explains why he doesn't notice that surprise is unpleasant. "Rose! I've been looking everywhere!"
She takes a deep, calming breath, and has to stop herself from edging away from him. He was dangerous. Her friend'd said so. But she had to stay calm, if she wanted to save the universe from him.
So, she took a hesitant step forward. "Right. Well. You've found me. Here I am. Shall we go back to the- the TARDIS now?"
He frowns, digging his hands into his pockets. "Well, I suppose we might as well, now. We've missed all of the festivities. Where were you, Rose?" He holds out a hand to her anyway...because he's been missing her and worrying about her all day. "C'mon then."
It's complicated. Everything she's been told tells her to stay away from him, but her arm reaches out automatically to take his hand as soon as he offers it. Strange, that, and after her fingers slide through, it's too late to jerk it back without alerting him. Strange, that it feels right.
She frowns. Was it some sort of mind control? Brainwashing? Was he really that charming? Bugger. The sooner she gets in and out, the better. "I was... meeting people."
Did she do that? Meet people? What did she do? What did they do? There hadn't been a lot of time for explanations, just that he was evil, and needed to be stopped, and that she and that handsome blonde bloke she was apparently in love with needed to stop him.
There's definitely something...odd. He can't pinpoint it, but Rose is acting...like something's frightened her on the planet and she wants to get away from it as quickly as possible. Who is he to tell her no if something's genuinely upset her?
He frowns over at her in concern. "Meeting who? Rose?"
"A friend of mine. I have friends." She did have friends. That man told her so, because he was her friend, and apparently had been for quite a long time. This Doctor should know that, if he paid a bit of attention to her, if he thought of her as anything but a pitiful bit of arm-candy meant to follow him around and agree with him. If anything, it reaffirmed the blond man's story.
He gives her a puzzled look. Of course she has friends. On Earth. "Here? Who?" Not Jack? It couldn't be...nor Sarah Jane, she'd have told him straightaway if Sarah Jane appeared. "Rose if you were just spending time with someone you could have told me, instead of just disappearing and leaving me looking everywhere. I thought you'd been...abducted."
"He said you'd say that," she muttered, tugging her hand free of him. Of course he'd keep track of her like she was a dog on a leash. She breezed forward in their direction, looking annoyed and uncomfortable. "Can we just go back to the TARDIS and forget about it?"
"Who said he'd say that?" He frowns after her but doesn't follow quite yet. 'They said' is always ominous. Always. "You want to forget about your friend?"
"I think I've forgotten quite enough, thanks to you," Wiping her memory for disobeying. The TARDIS was in sight, and she picked up the pace. Almost done. Almost done. Almost done.
"...What?" He stares for a moment and then strides up to grab her arm before she can get into the TARDIS, because that's a little more than ominous. "Forgotten what, Rose? What are you talking about? Who is this friend?"
