It is way, way, way past high time that Republicans realize this, and act accordingly. Yes, it's nice to have principles like McCain (refusing to use religion against his opponents) and to act decently, like Romney. It is also unfortunate that the High Road only leads to defeat.
The GOP needs to get down and just as dirty as the Dems. If they don't, then why bother? The GOP will forever be the also-ran party, with the exceptions of accidental wins. In that case, just shut the whole damn thing down and make way for someone else who actually wants to win.
