The first time they kiss, Mary-Louise is against the wall. Kate's leaning in, palms pressed flat near Mary-Louise's shoulders, body coming as close to encompassing hers as is possible. This is both the moment when Kate truly seems impossibly tall and Mary-Louise realizes how wrong this is. (The latter because she finds herself thinking of a comment Kate had made earlier -- "I'm pretty much an Amazon woman. Or a monster." -- and the way Justin had looked smitten when he replied, "I was afraid of you when I first met you. Still kinda am.") But she stays lost in the present because Kate's so close, still kissing her, and her mind is swimming with thoughts of long legs hanging off the edge of her bed, of Kate surrounding her this way when her back is against cotton sheets.

Kate moves away and wraps her fingers around Mary-Louise's wrist. "Should we get out of here? Probably not."

"Probably not," she agrees, but they still use their cellphones to lie about why they had to leave the party early.

(Their flushed faces would've given away that there's something they feel guilty about.)

The second time they kiss, Mary-Louise follows it by saying, "Is this weird? Going to bed with your ex's new girlfriend?"

Kate quirks an eyebrow. "No stranger than it is to sleep with your friend's new girlfriend the night you're introduced to her." She smiles. "I think we're both pretty much terrible people."

Mary-Louise can't respond; their third kiss is beginning.
