students

We have PA students where I work. I remember when I was a PA student, lo these two years ago, and I remember working my butt off. It's like being a serf. You just keep moving, do what you're told and do it quickly. I also spent a lot of time reading about whatever discipline I was rotating through. Where I went, in NY, they do a lot of " ( Read more... )

I think "no better ideas" is the main reason the vast majority of people go into whatever profession they end up. Especially if we're talking about well-paid professions - or even professions that have the reputation for being well-paid.

I am frequently appalled at the sheer number of people in IT who seem to operate under the impression "I got a CS degree, I should be well-paid now" with no concept whatsoever of actually having to learn anything or be useful in any way. Most of them seemed to have had the idea that once they got out of college they'd never have to learn anything again. Wrong field for that.

Back on the topic of your profession not mine, it does seem really odd to be detached from a major limb amputation. Pun not intended.

I think people long for the good old days when having a college degree qualified you for a better lifestyle. You were a comtroller or a regional manager or whatnot and you made a pretty good living. Now it seems much harder to drift into comfortable mediocrity. The American dream.

I think it's pretty awesome, but obviously not everyone feels like that. Just another thing to suffer through for some people.

dude med students are the same, especially my classmates now that our 4th year is coming to a close. i work my ass off in every rotation because its why i'm paying so much money and because come july, it will be my fault if someone kicks it when i'm on-call. and cuz this shit is still cool.

those PA students don't know how much fun they're having! they could be coming in at 5am to write notes, and then spend the rest of the day writing more notes- progress notes, transfer notes, etc. i'm on SICU at a very busy trauma and burn center and yet i've gotten the chance to attempt one a-line and one subclavian in 3 weeks. i will likely not get to do any other procedures for my last week.

That's too bad. I did a burn unit rotation and had to do 3-4 central lines or arterial lines a day. I got pretty comfortable with it. It was a great experience.

You describe the kind of schedule I had in PA school. These kids don't know how good they have it.

haha, i've been traded to the burn unit for my last week! i feel like a piece of property. at least it'll just be me, a resident i love and an awesome PA. i did get to help with a femoral a-line yesterday, but got a needlestick. and here i thought i'd get out of med school without one- my last one was 5 years ago.

i don't get that attitude in general, and it always bugs me when i notice it in people at work (especially in pa's, my pa's, as in - your old pa's, not medical pa's). i used to think it bugged me b/c when i was a pa i too worked my butt off b/c that's what i was supposed to do, and also, so i wouldn't miss any exciting stuff. there's just so much to fucking learn!

but now i realize that it bugs me in life, in any kind of job, in *anything.* there are very few things i would find boring or not worth doing, especially if i signed on to do it.

as i look around my messy apt. and contemplate the things i don't do in life, i sound very hypocritical to myself. but when i'm "in the shit," so to speak, that's exactly where i want to be, and it's always a rush. i don't get the avoidance of it...

That's what I think. sure there were rotations that I didn't like and I didn't put in any extra effort, but while I was there I always took full advantage of the opportunity to learn something. I don't get these kids.
