What should a guy get a girlfriend for Xmas? Within reason, naturally -- like, a piece of jewelry wouldn't be out of bounds but a diamond tennis bracelet would be; a ticket to a Broadway show and dinner would be fine, but not a plane ticket to Europe (not with these prices, at least); you get the picture. What kind of package-able gifts intrigue ( Read more... )

If memory serves, jewelry is always a hit, so long as the purchaser has decent taste.

This is why I'm asking: I don't wear jewelry and would feel embarrassed if someone gave me any -- I'd feel like he had no clue what I do and don't like. So, good to know that other chicks still like the shiny stuff...

Well, technically it's been 5+ years since I've had a real girlfriend. In the end it really depends on the recipient and as you said, how well the giver knows them. The best gifts are always intimate in nature, in my opinion.

what price points are you looking for?

"Within reason," but I wasn't given a price limit. I, personally, don't spend more than $100/person, and I'm usually way under that because I make a lot of my gifts. Some people have more cash on hand than I do, so use whatever you'd consider reasonable as a guide.

we're doing our poshcravings gift guide for women right now, so most of what i've been consumed with has been pretty high-end stuff, but...

there are some really cool concierge services out there. excitations.com offers experiential gifts - some are pretty lame, but some are really cool.

if you want stuff.stuff -

elsewares.com
cosafinajewelry.com
fancyjewels.com
shopscadonline.com
supermaggie.com
trunkt.com
twigsandheather.com
spitfiregirl.com

and my personal favorite piece of jewelry right now:

Most women I know would prefer the kind of stuff you mentioned--a class, for example--than a farkin' necklace. Can something along those lines be one of the items?

I've partly written it already, to include suggestions of classes at Queens College -- ballroom dancing, photography, painting, French. I really wish Queens had something like the New School, but ths'll do.

Another thought that's kind of a midpoint between experience and "thing"--some sort of item-of-the-month club. There must be some sort of high-end chocolate of the month club out there, right?

Ooooh, good idea.

since my taste is as far away from mainstream as you can possibly get, i really shouldn't comment.

but man, i would LOVE a gift certificate towards a tattoo, or a shopping spree at Patricia Field's.

Yeah, I was thinking gift certificate for a mani/pedi for lower budgets, and a facial and massage for those with a little more cash... This is Queens, after all, and for all the many cool people who live here there are 10 times as many who'd be happy with a shiny thing or a Victoria's Secret gift card.

My mom's been finding Le Creuset at TJ Maxx and hoarding it for me. For Xmas last year I got a Dutch oven. That stuff is harrrrrrd to travel with, given how heavy it is. But I still hope I get more this year.

That rocks. You know, it's like half the price in France? ::hint hint hint to the outside world::

And I wouldn't even mind getting some used stuff.

Not like I can afford a trip to france, but it's still a lovely idea...
