CostumingFebruary: Organized Chaos

Oct 06, 2012 16:33

So, it's Costuming February! Like a week into it, but whatever. I feel a bit like I'm swimming in open water right now. I'm desperately trying for order, but inspiration is hella impulsive and you sometimes just have to go where it drags you to get anything done at all. And sometimes you just have to stop looking at all the new Hobbit images and ( Read more... )

Before you order the pin from Amazon, check Walmart. Mine had them in the jewelry section the other day. I think it was around $5.

I've already ordered it, but considering I never go to Wal-Mart and there's not really one near me, it's probably worth the extra $2 not to have to venture to one.

So funny! I don't remember him saying "hella", but I'm sure he did since it's a total Cali thing! I'll give you a pass, but I normally just shake my head and walk away when people say it here.... :-)

I am very slow at the actual sewing. Most of this is prop work which I love and sail through. I can not use patterns. I tried to learn with patterns and I wound up altering them so much I felt it was a waste of a step. So I cut out the middle man and am teaching myself to drape and draft my own patterns. So far, it works just as well as starting with a pattern for me. Which still means lots of trial and error and being willing to cut something out for the sixth time to get it right.

That's funny though, sounds like the lessons I'm giving my neighbor's daughter. I have absolutely no formal training and am not a good teacher either. But if you can sew straight lines, you're pretty much good to go.

I'm excited to help her! We were going through camping gear over the weekend and throwing away a tent that's been ruined when I noticed the perfectly good poles which only work for that tent would make fabulous arrow shafts. I'll take you up on the reflective tape, thanks! Let me know when you get back and I can paypal you something for it and the shipping. :D

I'm thinking about seeing if her mom will let me bring her with me to GMX one afternoon for a few hours for costuming reasons. I think it would be awesome for her to meet you guys!

Yeah, we're going for budget friendly and easy over screen accuracy. The backpack/quiver is going to be our biggest hurdle. But I also cut off a bunch of clips from the thrown away tent which should be helpful.

Just seeing how her face lit up when I showed her some of our friends' sites with some of their work, it would definitely be fabulous. :)
