Life, or something like it.

So, I think it's time for a standard update on doings that are transpiring. There's really not much to say, so this should go quickly. But then I've never been known for brevity...

Some kids, no matter how much they're read to, don't really develop a love of reading. The lady who let me borrow Hugo Cabret says her son is that way. She's read to him all his life, she reads constantly herself and she's a writer. But he's just not that into it. I feel very blessed that Jonah loves his books so much! It's truly a magical thing. :)

Yay for reading :) I remember I actually got into trouble every so often at school... for reading too much :P Though mainly it was because I wasn't reading what they wanted me to read, but that is beside the point :P The best example was when a science teacher caught me reading and told me to write him a 10 page paper as punishment on something like relating science fiction to science fact. He just happend to have caught me reading Jules Verne :P

Heh, there is a noticeable bell curve in my reading history. I read and read and read in elementary school (there was no required reading outside of school then). It tapered off in middle school because suddenly I had a summer reading list and stuff I HAD to read for school. So I just dropped most all of it. I still managed a book here or there for leisure, but was AWFUL about reading the stuff I was actually supposed to read. Read almost nothing in high school. Got out of school and suddenly felt the need to READ ALL THE THINGS! Now I go back through school reading lists and occasionally pick one to read that I was supposed to read back then. ;)

That's an awesome teacher, btw.

Well, he was ok. I don't think he realized what I was reading, simply that I was reading and I tended towards Sci-Fi. It was however unusual in that his was the only time middle school students had an Earth Science class. I'm not sure how many other middle schools teach Earth Sciences in any shape or form.

Pretty sure that's what we did in 7th or 8th grade (can't remember which). In high school we started with Biology I in 9th grade, Biology II in 10th (one of these was Human Physiology), Chemistry in 11th and I think your fourth year you could choose to take the easy route with "Physical Science" (which I think was pretty much Earth Science over again) or Physics. But I homeschooled my fourth year, so I don't remember what the options were, exactly. I did both a Physical Science course and an Oceanography course through homeschool.

I remember we did a TON of dissections in 9th or 10th grade (whichever one wasn't Human Physiology). Everything from microscopic dissection of sponge cells to up to a two week dissection of a cat and everything in between. Basically one for each level of life form.

I apparently came home crying because I didn't learn to read at my first day of school.

in high school, i had a tendency to read my own stuff and keep up with whatever the class was doing at the same time. i got through the first 2 or 3 wheel of time books that way.

LOL! Jonah will be all, "whatevs, I learned to read in preschool. *yawn*"

See above comment to arymetore. I would occasionally read my own stuff, but almost never what the class was reading. I'd skim enough to barely pass a test, except for select few here and there. Mythology was fun and I think I'm the only one in my class who thoroughly enjoyed Walden.

That's a series I really need to pick up one of these days!

I lost interest in it about 6 or 7 books in, but by that point i was at tech and they were arriving as they were published. it was too complex to read like that without rereading swathes of the previous books (the get-you-up-to-speed chapter was waaay too long and i couldn't remember who was who). i really didn't like the direction some of the characters were taking at that point and wasn't getting enough story about the ones i cared about. that said, i know people who just love it, so mileages vary and whatnot.

I've heard the exact same complaints about the A Song of Fire and Ice series. But they're both something I feel is my geeky duty to at least give a chance.

Me too! It's really an awesome bonding thing for us. :)

No prob! It had some moments of slow down, but after I thought about it for a bit, I understand the necessity and I think I understand your aim with the story as a whole and can appreciate what you're doing. That said, any story that leaves me wanting to know what happens next is a good story in my opinion! I love your creatures, too and am now almost certain that our neighbor's enormous yellow lab mix is probably a selkie. ;)

Likewise! For once I'm not so bummed about everyone's posts on D*C preparations this year, even though I'm not going. I've got ALEP to look forward to where I'll see several friends and I get to see you in October and then if we can get our act together and decide if we're going for the Princess 1/2 next year... I'm just glad I'm going to get to see at least some people. :)

BTW, would it be completely inappropriate of me to wear pointy ears and silver contacts at your booth? ;)

If what I think is coming is coming, it seems like there would be no way to avoid a go go go pace. Plus, you have fair amount of world building and character development out of the way which tends to slow things down.

YES! Definitely still planning D*C 2012, possibly with Chris as well. I'm already budgeting my time to get all the costumes done I want to do. Maybe even one or two for him, if he's willing. :D

Well, you gave them some wicked cool attributes! I immediately thought, "hmm, where can I get contacts that look like liquid silver?" I think I've found some for cheap. I was thinking Ailionora elf stuck in the modern day world. So, plain clothes, hiding my ears as best as I can but not much I can do about my crazy eyes. ;) Works?

Can't wait either! Will be nice to go to a con in my hometown for once and to get a whole weekend to hang out with you!
