Mogwai steps up his game and I get to live out Elmer Fudd's wet dream (i.e. kill da wabbit).

So, I'm going to actually start going back and talking about October for a bit, since I sort of missed it here. Maybe these can count as writing exercises. Whatever. It's cold and dark there's a constant mist in the air and I'm solar powered and require temps above 70 to function properly. This day has me wanting to curl up in a ball and do ( Read more... )

"Suburbia isn't used to that sort of thing."

it's a sad story, but this had me cracking up.

and regarding spry kitties, spot killed a mouse that ran near her when she was 20. they're hunters to the end, even if they're usually just killing insects...

Parts of the situation had me cracking up even in the middle of dealing with it. Mogwai was just so damn proud, it was funny to see.

that's exactly the way it was with the cardinal that whichever of these (calvin) killed. "yes, you're a good cat, for being good at being a cat. now, let's take this thing outside, so you don't get guts all over the house." and i've never seen them as happy as they were playing with the carcass. i just wish they'd have actually eaten the thing.

That was one thing I left out, too. Before I got Mogwai inside, he comes up to it, rubs against my leg affectionately as I'm standing over it, then flops down and proceeds to gently bat at is as though it were one of his little furry mouse toys. If he had just been a man about it and killed it to begin with and/or done something constructive with it, I wouldn't have felt so bad. But he left me to do his dirty work, little bastard. ;)

I had to clean chipmunk guts off the kitchen floor at the house on Hartside once. Cat doors are not always great.

Yay for Mogwai :) Pretty hard to chase down rabbits... having done it a few times myself. So yay for him still being a spry kitty.

But yeah... I understand about the having to clean up after them when they don't finish the job or if the mouse trap doesn't finish things off. At least at the parent's house, I had access to some nice machetes that were able to completely bisect if necessary...

And yes... suburbia certainly isn't all that used to such "butchery". But sometimes it is necessary, so great kudos for you for knowing what was needed and doing it.

What can I say, I was raised by a farm boy. ;) I didn't even think about the machete. But that would have seemed overkill for the little guy. I need a nice hunting knife about the size of Strider's. ;)

Yeah, me too, though not at a level where I needed to deal with animals much. And the machete gives a nice swing that takes care of things rather quickly. Hehe, yeah, very useful knives like that. I'm glad I have my weaponry for when I have to go into the crawlspace to potentially fight the possum that is worming its way in under the house at the HVAC unit...

Well, you can't stop cats from being cats!

I see lots of that sort of thing out here in the wilds... and with 24 cats (all barn cats, don't worry!), the savagery is continual. One does get used to the carnage, eventually, but I know I drove my mother crazy with all my ill-fated rescue attempts when I was little. Yes. ;-)

Yeah, my dad definitely raised me to know how to deal with this sort of thing. He was raised on a Southern Ohio farm as well. :) But, I just don't get very many opportunities to exercise it. Between all your cats, they probably finish off what they drag up, don't they?
