OK, I won't buy these books. I had thought about picking them up in paperback, but I think just checking them out at the library will be quite enough. Whenever I get around to doing that, which isn't going to be very soon, methinks. ;-)
Thanks for the post. I was actually considering starting these recently. Partly because I could use some brain stim without the tv, but also not self-helpy, and partly because I completely missed out on Harry Potter.
I read the first book for book club o_0 and from all I have heard and read, I so do not want to bother with the rest of it. Your review has pretty much summed up how I felt about it.
Yeah, it was kind of like watching a really bad train wreck and pulling off a band-aid rolled up into one. There was this feeling that it was terrible but I didn't want to look away while simultaneously I rushed through the entire series knowing curiosity would kill me if I didn't give it a chance and hoping that just getting it over with quickly would somehow lessen the blow.
You should read cleolinda's recaps, though. They're hilarious! Especially the Breaking Dawn one. I love her description of Amun: "is a cranky bastard who apparently has the power of being an unhelpful jerk." Her vampire roll call really highlights the feeling I had of forgetting I was reading about vampires and thinking I was reading an X-Men comic.
Lol, I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like that about her books. For me they were like candy, cheap candy. Do I need them? No. Was it worth using to kill a few evenings because I was bored out of my mind before I had my baby? Yes. Will I re-read them anytime soon? Not unless you have a gun to my head.
Oh and the movie did have one improvement over the book. We didn't have to read 300+ pages of Bella whining about how perfect Edward is and how she is so plain and can't figure out why he is with her. We just had to deal with her random sputtering and twitching! ;)
I think cleolinda related it to twinkies, but yes, that's the general idea. I'm kind of, in a way (now that the painful memories of them are blending into a haze with some good vampire fiction) glad I read them, just to know what all the fuss was about, but damn it, what is all the fuss about?! ;)
Good lord, what was with the twitching!? But yes, very good point about not having to listen to/read about Bella's incessant whining.
Oh my goodness, have you heard of rifftrax? They are done by the guys who do MST3K and they just released their Twilight Riff today. Totally makes the movie worth it. I just about died laughing!
