Over for now.

What a relief; I finally got through to Dreamhost after emailing them all weekend. They agreed to get rid of their hold on the domain as long as I agreed to delete all of the content on the site, which I had been prepared to do since I already had a full backup on my computer. It was still kind of frustrating, deleting all of that information and ( Read more... )

I probably missed this, but why do you have to remove your content?

and I'm hosted with Surpass, and they're cheap and good. At least they've always been good to me.

I'd always thought it was the hostee's place to deal with copyright infringement, but apparently Dreamhost has a habit of arbitrarily removing content they deem inappropriate. One case I saw involved an artist who had uploaded backups of their own artwork and ended up with a suspended account because Dreamhost decided it was some kind of "copyright infringement". In our case, the way they handled the whole thing was a little unexpected, since all they really did was disable HTTP access (rendering the subdomain useless) and left all of the data intact but just renamed the root folder.

Anyway, I contacted them and they said the only way they'd reinstate the subdomain (so I could redirect to another site- they wouldn't even let me delete the damn thing) was if I deleted every last file on the account. So I backed everything up, and CLICK. Like I said, depressing, even though I had backups.

But thanks for the site info- I'm looking into basically every service I can find right now. Can I ask how they are with speed and downtime?

wow...this is the first time I've heard such bad things from dreamhost, everyone else says they're wonderful

Surpass is pretty good to me, I rarely have downtimes. Maybe a few minutes realyl late at night once in a long while, but that's it.

Good luck finding a new host.
