HOLY SHIT FRIDGE BRILLIANCE

So, I just realised something about Simoun. Specifically, the name of the country where the show takes place: Simulacrum Kyuukoku, which is translated as 'Theocracy of Simulacrum', 'Holy Land of Simulacrum', or 'Simulacrum Theocracy'.

What I realised:

In-universe, this is a piece of land (and water, since the capital is on a peninsula in some kind of ( Read more... )

Tempus Spatium called. He wants his maidens back.

I think the whole situation is just an allegory for the concept that physical might is corruptive. It's actually a bothersome trend in a good deal of government conspiriacy-based fiction, and sometimes I wish it might stop. There is and will be corruption (there's no place it doesn't exist entirely), but surely there can be an acceptable shade of grey on the fringe? Why does the "strength to protect" have to come from the abstract ideal of religion in order to be acceptable?

But as a non-relgious heathen, I ramble... please excuse me.

The 'strength to protect' doesn't have to come from that ideal necessarily; it's just that if it does, it's...well, at least in the show's opinion (and mine) it's a bad idea to expect priestesses to fight a sordid and venal war for you. It demeans religion, it demeans strength and protection, and quite frankly it demeans warfare.

Ah, see, that's not what I meant. I'm not denying anything you just stated in this comment. I'm simply disappointed that there isn't some capability for middle ground between physical might with sanity/morality and religion. :P

It's certainly been tried in the real world (with, as all else, mixed success). I don't think it's particularly well-suited to the universe that was created for our consumption with Simoun for the same reason that I don't think religious salvation is particularly well-suited to some other works.
