I am a white man.

I have never experienced racial animus directed against me.

On some level I feel that I shouldn't even be talking about this, that I have nothing to say, that I can't possibly measure up to the amazing, insightful, thoughtful posts that other people have made. This is because that's what some elements in this society tell me.

My answer: because everybody needs to care. Because if we only care about people who are like us we really do not care about people at all.

This. Just...this.

I care about racism directed against me, yes. But I am also acutely aware of the fact that in many ways, I've lived a very privileged life - I was educated at private schools, and as a kid I never wanted for anything - and that there are people of different ethnicities that are discriminated against for different reasons. Making sure that I'm not one of the people doing the discriminating is a conscious decision I've had to make.

Racism isn't just some other person's problem. It's everyone's problem, whether they've experienced it or not, and I think it's great that there are people who are white or male or members of other privileged groups that realise that. So, thank you for posting this. It makes me feel a lot better about the world to know that there are other people who care.
