As if the vague call wasn’t nerve-wracking enough, Junho had to go to the hospital by himself. Everyone had a life or simply a job, except for him. He felt stronger though, since he had managed to go to see Chansung and come back using his other senses and of course brain. Junho asked Chansung to keep his mouth shut about this - he didn’t want his parents excusing themselves from their jobs just to bring him to the hospital and Chansung felt guilty for having a race on such an important day. Junho just slapped his back, telling him he’s a big boy and he’s able go to meet Wooyoung alone. At least that was what he tried to believe in. Also, he didn’t want to abuse Chansung’s generosity since the boy would usually do everything to make Junho feel better and safe.
It required more determination to reach the hospital elevator and Junho felt as if he has accomplished one of the toughest missions in his life. The hospital was huge and the people were in a hurry, not always hearing Junho’s timid questions about which direction he should go to. Just when he was close to the elevator he met a nurse, who was kind enough to show him the way.
The friendly girl from before greeted Junho, her voice cheerful, “Hello! You came to see doctor Jang, right?”
“Yes,” Junho smiled and touched his nose, realising he forgot his sunglasses.
“He’s waiting for you, I’ll help you to the cabinet.”
“Thank you,” Junho heard her coming from around the table and touching his back as her other hand was placed on his muscular arm. He could feel how his own muscles were tense as soon as she touched him - Junho was still nervous about the meeting.
She opened the door for him and Junho entered the cabinet, his stick hitting against the cosy chair, “I brought Mr. Lee Junho for you, doctor.”
“Thanks, Sohee. Sit down, Junho.”
“Uh, okay,” he touched the chair and sat down, hearing the door being closed.
“How did you sleep?”
Junho thought that question was weird. He also thought the answer should’ve been quite obvious and maybe Wooyoung was mocking him, “How can I sleep after that ambiguous call?”
Wooyoung chuckled, “True. Anyway, let’s get down to the business.” He stood up and came towards Junho, placing something on his knees. Junho touched the square hard thing and realised it was a small stack of papers.
“What’s that paper?”
“It’s a contract. Once you sign it, you legally become my official guinea pig, or as you’ll be officially known, my patient. I just have one question for you.”
Junho felt the heat rising inside of his body - Wooyoung chose him. He just needs to sign those papers. However, the last part of his short speech was increasing Junho’s worry. “Yes?”
“If everything goes along the original plan and your eyes are cured, what if I say you can’t race after this because the contract says a patient must refrain from doing risky activities? Racing is a risky activity as we know. What would you chose - leaving this hospital without signing the documents and staying blind for the rest of your life or signing the papers, agreeing to ending your racing activities and being able to see again?”
Junho felt a knot growing in his stomach as this absurd question clearly had no bright side. Vision or his passion? “I’d say you must have a really sick mind for creating a contract like this. It’s like me asking you - dance or not to dance? But if you really want to know, I’d choose the surgery because you wouldn’t follow me around all the time, so I could cheat anytime I want.” Junho smirked, only imaging Wooyoung’s frown.
“You’re lucky I’m not the one responsible for the paperwork, so you’re safe this time, cheater.”
“Are you going to give me more tests like this one, I could prepare better for the next time, you know.” Junho snorted and he felt a gust of air as Wooyoung leaned in, his hands grasping on the armrests of Junho’s chair. He was uncomfortably close now.
“You sure are more arrogant than before.” His voice was too serene, which could only mean Junho managed to annoy him. “But it’s better than a scared blind man, afraid to even lift his head towards me.”
Junho clenched his teeth. “Tell me more about the surgery.”
Wooyoung pulled away, giving Junho his desired personal space. “We cultivate embryonic stem cells in a test tube and then add proteins to trigger them into developing. Thus, a new retina is being created. It‘ll take a few weeks for it to fully develop, so we could use it for your eyes. If your eyes accept this newly created retina and your immune system doesn‘t reject it - you‘ll be able to regain your vision.”
„And I‘m the first human to ever get this surgery, right?“
„Yes, we‘ve been doing this research on rats and needless to say - it was very successful. We‘re not promising anything. We just hope this experimental surgery will work for you. And for our benefit of course.“
Junho sighed, touching the papers beneath his hands. This was what he wanted. „Show me where to sign.“
„Very well.“ Wooyoung moved Junho‘s hand a few times, flipping the pages and indicating where he should sign. After a few scribbles Junho felt content, his conscience flooding with positive thoughts. „It‘s all done.“
„I‘m all yours now.“ The papers were being taken away from him and with that action Junho could feel his hopes blooming instantly.
„Indeed.“ Wooyoung chuckled, surprising Junho, „Let‘s go to the laboratory. Hyung is waiting for us.“
Junho followed Wooyoung, his hand on the doctor‘s shoulder as the latter guided him through the countless corridors the enormous hospital had. Being a part of university it also had many medicine students running around and greeting Wooyoung as he probably was quite popular even here. It seemed like high school wasn‘t the only place for Wooyoung‘s popularity to grow. Junho asked a few more
questions related to the surgery on their way to the laboratory, trying to break the ice between them both and it seemed like it worked as Wooyoung didn‘t look irritated by his presence anymore. He sounded interested in answering the questions and Junho could only guess how a dancer could become a genius doctor. Junho didn‘t know anything about Wooyoung‘s grades at school nor his interests
other than dance.
They halted and Junho was a bit puzzled if they were still in the hospital, because they reached the restricted area and he could swear he could hear a low bass and music coming out of somewhere. Wooyoung swiped his hard through the lock and the music became louder as they entered what Junho assumed was the laboratory. No doubt, he could smell something strange and the room felt sterile, but he was distracted by someone singing in falsetto, though it was kind of a muted falsetto. Junho felt Wooyoung take a quick step forward and Junho was left standing alone with no guidance.
“For God’s sake, what the hell are you doing, hyung?” Wooyoung screeched.
“Can’t you tell? I’m drinking my Americano from this lovely test-tube.” Junho heard someone slurp which was followed by a loud slap. “Ouch, what was that for?”
“Isn’t that obvious? Get that straw out of the test-tube, wash it and never do that again. No, just throw everything away and buy a new one. It’s been polluted with your germs now.”
“Wooyoungie, you’re such a neat freak, give your hyung a kiss and everything will be okay. I’ll forgive you for breaking my favourite cup yesterday and I and this test-tube won’t part till you buy me a new cup.”
Wooyoung growled, letting out a sigh of exasperation. If there was someone, who was completely out of the usual doctor character, it was this particular hyung. Wooyoung had no power against his weird antics. “You’re not normal, Junsu hyung.”
“So what? Hey hey, don’t turn off the music.” He yelped, another slap reaching Junho’s hearing, “Stop hitting my hands!”
“This is a laboratory, not a night club. You should know that the best, hyung.”
“Wooyoungie, you’re going to stay single. Forever. No hope for you. No one will tolerate your nagging. Even my mum doesn’t nag that much as you do. I’m telling you, only someone who’s not a human being could live together with you. By the way, I saw this new pet shop on my way to the hospital today. I noticed this fox behind the glass and I thought you two would make a great couple - blank faces, no interests in having fun and probably both with zero experience in getting pleasure. ”
Junho snorted loudly, barely containing himself as this Junsu person kept on blabbering whatever was on his mind. Now he knew his laugh probably brought their attention to him as he most likely was forgotten during their conversation. “Aigoo ya, who’s that cute sunshine over there?” Junho widened his eyes in surprise as he found Junsu before him in a speed of light. The latter cupped his face, talking to him in a tiny voice that only little children could find cute. “Smile again, boy. You’re bringing the brightness into this gloomy laboratory with that foxy brat over there.”
“Hyung!” Wooyoung yelled, face palming at this person, who was older than him and yet acted like a complete moron. “He’s our patient. The experimental surgery. Does it ring a bell?” He grabbed Junsu’s hands and removed them from Junho’s face, who couldn’t help but snort at their interaction.
“Oh... Oooooooh!” He clapped once loudly. “The boy, who lived.” Junho guessed it was Wooyoung who exhaled hopelessly.
“Junsu hyung...” The level of irritation in the younger doctor’s voice was rising quickly.
“Okay okay...” Junsu coughed, taking Junho’s hand in his and shaking it, speaking tohim in a very formal tone. “Hello, my name is Kim Junsu. I’m the head chef of this experimental research laboratory, Wooyoung is my minion. Though he came up with the idea of this experimental surgery and actually is a surgeon, I was the one to give him the means and the rats to conduct the research. Thus, that
makes me a part of this wonderful discovery. We will run some test for you now, inspect every cell in your eyes and prepare the miraculous test-tube for the surgery. This will take quite a few days, our beloved Lee Junho. Oh, and don’t be afraid of Wooyoung. I know about your past relationship, but believe me, the guy is just playing cool, he’s quite lovely. Well, except for acting like a millennium old grandma sometimes and-”
“That’s enough, hyung. I’ll buy you a new cup, so you can stop embarrassing both of us.”
Junsu chuckled, turning around and patting Wooyoung’s back, “The next time you destroy something I love, I’m going to feed you one of my rats.” Junsu’s voice was menacing, but soon it was replaced by whistling as if that threat has never happened. Junho figured the whole act was to make Wooyoung feel embarrassed, whilst making him to repay for the broken cup. If there was tension before, Junsu completely removed it.
“It’s nice to meet you,” Junho smiled and Junsu squeezed his shoulder.
“Such a polite boy. Reminds me of the glorious days when Wooyoung first came in here, worshiping me and promising to be a useful employee,” Junsu sighed dramatically. “Let’s do the tests now, shall we? We have quite a lot to do.”
“Sure.” Junho nodded as his excitement was sparked.
After a few hours of listening to constant bickering between Junsu and Wooyoung, various tests and silent snickering Junho was let out of the laboratory, Junsu tagging along with them both together as he had to do some business in a hallway across from where Junho and Wooyoung were heading to. It was not the end yet, Junho had to stay at the hospital overnight and couldn’t eat anything, because he had
a few more tests tomorrow.
Junsu hooked his arm over Junho’s and led him forward. “We’re taking you to the luxurious deluxe hospital room meant for our special patients. You won’t have to deal with grumpy old people, you can call the nurse whenever you want and ask for a glass of wine, you can just chill here. We make sure our guinea pigs get the beast treatment and we also expect to get good result as a reward.”
“That makes sense. I won’t watch TV to keep my eyes safe.” Junho joked, hearing Junsu laugh as the latter pulled away from him.
“See you tomorrow, Junho.” Junsu left them and Wooyoung opened the door for Junho and let him in, showing the way to the bed.
“Is he always like that?” Junho inquired, touching the soft material and thrusting his hands into the mattress. It seemed to be comfortable and Junsu wasn’t lying about the luxury as these walls were isolated well and he couldn’t hear much noise coming from the outside. He could also smell flowers and the temperature was just right.
“Crazy? Yes. But he’s the only one like that in here, which makes working with him entertaining,” Wooyoung chuckled. Junho figured that bickering earlier was just a daily routine for them and there was nothing serious behind it.
“Is he your best friend here?”
“He’s the only person, who I can call a friend here, actually. Both of us are the youngest doctors in the research department. Mostly our team consists of doctors, who’re above 40 years old. Being young is tough, you can hardly get recognition without years of practice and other remarkable things to prove your intelligence. Some of them still keep looking down on me, though it’s a bit easier for Junsu. Laboratory has improved a lot since he became the head chef.”
“Being young, thus having more creativity, huh?” Junho sat down on the bed, his legs swinging in the air.
“That too. If your surgery turns out to be successful, those prejudiced people will have to respect me as an equal.”
They fell silent, thoughts flooding both of their minds. Wooyoung was thinking about success and Junho was thinking about something that has been bothering him for some time now. He was too curious. “Wooyoung?”
“Hmm?” He seemed to be pulled out of the flood of his thoughts.
“Can I see you?” Junho asked in a low voice, hiding his nervousness.
“See me? How?”
“With these.” Junho wriggled his fingers in the air, earning an oh from Wooyoung.
“Why?”
“I want to know how much you’ve changed. Actually, I can hardly remember even my sister’s face...”
Those walls had a really terribly great isolation, because all Junho could hear now was Wooyoung’s calm breathing as the latter was thinking what to answer to him. “Fine.” Junho felt pressured now that the answer was positive, mentally cursing himself, because touching Wooyoung’s face seemed a bit improper now.
Wooyoung moved closer as Junho was sitting on the edge of his bed. He could feel Wooyoung’s thighs brushing against his lightly, almost no physical contant, but Junho was oversensitive for some reason. Wooyoung touched Junho’s wrists gently and placed the cold hands on his face not saying a thing.
Wooyoung was warm, much warmer than Junho and that warmth was lulling him as his fingers slowly pressed against the soft skin. He could feel a few wrinkles on Wooyoung’s forehead, but they disappeared quickly and Junho guessed those wrinkles showed only when the older boy was lifting his eyebrows in a surprise. His eyebrows weren’t too thick or too thin, the eyelids were slightly wet and Junho moved
his fingers onto Wooyoung’s nose, feeling the perfect nose bone followed by solid cheekbones. Junho frowned slightly. If there was a thing he could remember well about Wooyoung’s appearance it was his puffy cheeks, but now they were gone. Wooyoung was really skinny, he could feel it caressing his sharp jawbone and moving onto his small ears. His hair was also nicely styled and Junho thought perhaps it was similar to his hairdo. He smiled, removing his fingers from his doctor’s face.
“What’s the conclusion?” Wooyoung asked, still standing close to Junho.
“Your cheeks are gone, you seem to be fit,” Junho poked his own cheek, “And your hairstyle is similar to mine.”
“We’re twins then.” Wooyoung snorted, moving away from Junho. “Similar appearance, have had shitty experience health wise... ”
“...and know nothing about each other. We can fix this.”
“Are you talking about your friendly proposal to get to know you better?”
Junho bit his lip. “I am. I think... If we’ve met on different circumstances, we could’ve become friends. I don’t mean to be pushy, but if you want... If you’re willing to try this thing out... I’m going to prove you I’m not an asshole, who destroys people’s dreams.”
Wooyoung exhaled and his breathe sounded heavy. Junho was clenching his teeth as Wooyoung was being mute and considered the friendly proposal. “I don’t know what I’m getting myself into and maybe Junsu has poured something into my drink, but... Let’s do it.”
Junho wanted to call the nurse and ask to get the wine, but he figured the wine part was just another joke from Junsu’s fantasy. For the first time in a few weeks pairJunho was able to enjoy the dreams he had that night.
