We reached the abandoned industrial district, full of empty warehouses and whatnot. I could count the flickering lights on both of my hands - there weren’t many of them, just a few. Basically because this place has been deserted for a long time, no one finds it cosy, people tend to stay away from dark places. Not to mention the shady business going on there. We were a part of it right now, though our shady business wasn’t anything like drug dealing, prostitution or similar things. We were on a hunt.
Chansung halted, everyone’s doing the same, hands on their sheaths. I felt it, everyone did. The blood thirst was one of the easiest emotions to recognise. We were looking at this really huge warehouse, almost like a football field, maybe even bigger. It was enlightened from the inside, so we’ve decided to move.
I could feel the presence of vampires, but I couldn’t guess how many of them were inside the building. It seemed like they were moving a lot. Chansung nodded to us, signaling we were going to enter the warehouse in a few seconds.
He ripped off the door and we gathered inside quickly, not believing our eyes. The building was empty. “Impossible.” I mumbled, looking around. Everyone was close to each other, as something was obviously wrong.
“There’s something on that table.” Nichkhun whispered, looking at the other end of the building.
“I don’t think we should go there, I suggest we come back with backup.” Taecyeon offered, but Chansung seemed very confident as his brother was right beside him.
“It’s okay. Let’s check it.” Our group moved towards the other side, but when we reached the middle of the warehouse - the windows shattered suddenly, dozens of vampires jumping inside the building, circling around us. One of the vampires looked different though.
She really was different, her scent wasn’t one of a newborn’s. The female vampire had dark brown long hair, her huge chocolate eyes somewhat looked similar to Nichkhun’s. She was astonishing in many ways. “Attack.” She commanded, and the chaos began.
I was trying concentrate, but the bond made me watch out for Chansung more than for myself. He was really powerful, killing a couple of vampires just by touching their chests, moving swiftly and gracefully. “Shit.” I managed to protect myself as three newborns tried to kill me.
Something caught my attention as the presence of the newborns’ leader seemed to get closer to Nichkhun, with something shiny and small in her fingers. Chansung was the first one to notice the upcoming attack on his brother as he moved to his side, killing four more vampires on his way. I felt as if I needed to protect Chansung, but what happened next was something none of us was looking forward to.
Chansung tried to hit the female vampire, but then she threw the shiny round object to Nichkhun, Chansung turning around to save his brother from whatever was about to hit him. But then, Nichkhun caught the thing and used his chance to rip off Chansung’s shirt, attaching the round object to his chest. A severe pain pierced my chest, making me fall to the ground, Chansung doing the same.
He was in enormous pain, I could feel everything through our bond. I wanted Nichkhun to help his brother, but he was just standing, looking at him with an innocent smile on his face, hugging the female vampire around her waist. I began looking around, trying to scream at someone, who might help Chansung, but what I saw was even worse - all of us were caught by strong and feisty newborns, our bodies imprisoned under their sharp claws. I could smell blood.
I coughed, cringing on the ground and feeling sharp nails digging into my skin. I could focus on Chansung right now, who was on his knees, elbows on the ground. Whatever was attached to his chest - it was making him weak, it was hurting him so bad I felt every of his body cell fighting it. Chansung was absolutely powerless.
Everyone was panting, huffing, trying to collect their thoughts on what have just happened. And then, I heard Nichkhun speaking. “Your confidence was very convenient for me, brother. It made it easier for Victoria too.” He let go off of her, squatting in front of Chansung, whose perfect face was buried in his palms. His body was twitching slightly.
“W-what…is this…” Chansung hissed, not being able to move from his position.
Nichkhun took him by the bare shoulders and moved his brother to face him. “Hold him, he’s powerless right now.” He ordered two newborns. “Chansung, this device is injecting concentrate of liquid silver into your veins. It won’t kill you, but it can make you powerless and hurt a lot.”
“You p-planned this…” Chansung coughed, his eyes burning in anger. “Why…”
“Why? Oh, come on. You left me, you didn’t give a fuck about me, not even once. And when I found you, hoping I wouldn’t need to take these measures…” Nichkhun glanced at the device, “…I learned you found yourself a lover, a filthy human being. That wouldn’t be so upsetting, if you didn’t make a final bonding with him.” Nichkhun spat on the ground, staring at me with disgust. “I won’t let you have everything you want, it’s always like that. If I can’t have you - no one will.” Nichkhun kissed Chansung, biting on his lips and sucking the unique blood greedily. He pulled away quickly, spitting on the ground. “It seems like silver is spreading quickly.”
I saw blood traces on Chansung’s chest, running down his bare abdomen. The device was stuck tightly, making my lover grit his teeth in pain. “Nichkhun… Get this thing off of me… It hurts.” He hissed.
“I’m sorry, I can’t do that.”
“You know k-killing me won’t… Bring you any good.” Chansung groaned, opening his eyes.
“I’m not going to kill you. Victoria will help me to keep you safe. That’s all I want.” Nichkhun turned on his heel, taking a step closer to Taecyeon. “But I will kill him first - he wasn’t supposed to become a vampire. Taecyeon, I’ll take back what belongs to me - your life.”
“You, psycho.” Taecyeon hissed, a bunch of newborns keeping him down on his knees. Junsu was looking at him, looking calm, but I knew he was so afraid of his partner it made him freeze.
“What the hell does this mean, Nichkhun?!” Yola screamed, the disbelief in her face was mixed with pain. She was betrayed along with Chansung. “Where did you get this bitch from? When?”
“Don’t be mad at me. I turned her about one year ago, when we were close to finding Chansung. You did your job well, Yola.”
“I didn’t sign up for this shit, you know it! If I knew what was going on in that crazy head of yours…”
“You would be dead by now.” Nichkhun cut her off, turning away.
“I made such an unforgivable mistake…” Chansung whispered, closing his eyes. “Sometimes you think about people like you do about yourself. You trust them, you believe they wouldn’t act like your evil twin, but they do. The next moment that person is baring your fangs at you, threatening you. Nichkhun, I’m disappointed in myself for not being able to change your attitude, to change your personality. I’m regretting I haven’t killed you back there when you tried to kill Taecyeon.” I felt talking was too hard for Chansung, but nevertheless he voiced out everything he wanted to say.
Nichkhun took another step closer to Taecyeon. Junsu was utterly lost, his nerves eating him up alive. “Say all you want, but I’m doing as I want from now on.” He unsheathed his sword, smiling at Taecyeon.
It seemed like all of us tried to stop him, our voices mixing with each others’, yelling at Nichkhun at full volume, our voices making the remaining pieces of broken glass shutter hopelessly. But no one could stop him, as Nichkhun rose the silver sword above his head, angling it at Taecyeon’s chest. I wanted to break free, to break Nichkhun’s head off and pierce his heart with the same sword, but what happened next made all of us gasp in shock and freeze completely.
Somehow, Junsu broke free, using the most power he had just right before the sword pierced his lover’s heart. Junsu was hugging him tightly, placing the last kiss on Taecyeon’s lips as the sharp silver blade pierced both of their hearts, turning their embrace into a light grey cloud of dust. They were gone.
An unimaginable scream left Chansung’s aching throat, I just stared at the empty space in front of Nichkhun, the image being imprinted in my memory like a tattoo. I was in too much of a shock to notice Nichkhun heading towards me, grinning grimly. I didn’t know if it was possible, but it seemed like I could hear Chansung’s thoughts at that moment, though the only thing I could make out was run away.
But how could I? I felt the same pain as Chansung did. I was as powerless as him. Just then I realised how lucky Junsu was to kiss his lover for the last time, to feel Taecyeon’s last breath on his warm lips, to share the last moment in his embrace. I was so young, but it seemed like the Reaper has re-appeared again, claiming my life for sure this time.
I saw the silver sword above my head, its blade grinning at me in thousands of shades as the light reflected on it. “Have a safe trip to hell.” Nichkhun smirked and was about to pierce my heart, but then he turned around swiftly, cussing someone. I saw a white cat, jumping off his neck, which had fresh claw marks on it.
It was the same cat from the park, I couldn’t believe my eyes. How did it get here? This tiny creature was like a gift. And then I saw her.
She was much more beautiful then a painting could convey. Her red dress framing the perfect body, long dark hair brushing against her back. I looked at her dark brown eyes and noticed a glint of silver. Chansung’s mother was the most mesmerising creature in this world.
The power and charisma she was emitting made newborns back away instantly, knowing they won’t win this battle against this pureblood. Even before they turned around, she reached her hands forward and smiled, making the fire burn them in seconds. She glanced at Victoria with disgust. “Die.” She burned her like the newborns, not even laying a finger on her.
“M-mom…” Nichkhun backed away, he was more than afraid. The pureblood, who was so mighty a few minutes ago was terrified now, seeing the powerful vampire moving towards him quickly.
“I’m disappointed.” She pushed him to the wall, her nails digging into the pale skin of his neck. “You’ve lived long enough and the damage you’ve made is more than devastating.”
“Please, no!” He begged her, but the ruthless expression never left the female’s face.
“I hope you find peace, my son.” She pulled away and took the sword off the ground using her powers. Nichkhun yelped when the silver blade pierced his heart, turning him into nothing. The silence fell.
The cat jumped on Chansung’s mother’s shoulder as she went to her son and took him in her arms, lifting him like he was a weightless feather. Then, she looked at me. “I will return him to you someday. Yola, take care of them both.” She glanced at me and then at Wooyoung, who was as shocked as me and Yola.
“Y-yes, my lady…” Yola stuttered, bowing her head down.
When I returned my eyes to the spot where Chansung and his mother was, it was already empty. They left us without noticing it. I still couldn’t move.
I was eager to go out as soon as the sun set down, because the palace was too empty for the three of us. It’s been like this for almost thirty years already since that day. I couldn’t stand being closed in the palace, but it was the only place I could call home even if it felt like a prison. Everyone left us when they learned about what had happened. Wooyoung and Yola were the only ones, who stayed by my side.
I couldn’t bring myself to go to Taecyeon’s and Junsu’s room - everything was left untouched. The same with Chansung’s room. I knew he was alive, because of our bond. But it didn’t ease my worries as days grew to weeks, weeks to months, months to years. It took me about a week to recover from the physical pain I got through our bond, but I didn’t know how much time it took for Chansung to heal. I was hoping he wasn’t suffering a lot. Mentally too.
I was happy to breathe in the night into my dead lungs, trying to decide where should I go tonight. I knew every place, every tiny alley by heart. I knew the people in these streets, I watched them as they grew old. And then I’ve decided to go to the cemetery. My family was already dead, even my little sister, who was unfortunate to get into that car accident together with our parents. Today was the fifth anniversary of their unfortunate death.
I took a bouquet of white roses and placed it on their grave. The full moon enlightened the grey monument, with my family’s names written on it. Even if it was stupid to think like that, but I was hoping they knew I was still alive, watching me from somewhere above the clouds. Well, considerably alive.
I jumped suddenly, feeling the so painfully known scent of blood, somewhere not too far away. My instincts were moving my body towards the source even before I was able to think about doing it. I soared, not minding the tree leaves sticking to my curly hair. It looked so pointless right now. I reached the park in less than ten seconds and the scent was gone suddenly.
The darkness was surrounding me, only the silver light of moon fighting through the branches could illuminate the objects around me. “Damn!” I kicked a stone, making it hit the tree.
“Still lively and strong.” Chansung’s voice reached my ears, making me stiffen. “And even more handsome.” He jumped off the tree, coming towards me slowly. I felt like watching him for the first time - I couldn’t move a single muscle, just marvel as his unearthly perfect face.
Chansung was standing right in front of me, giving the warm smile. “I like beautiful statues, but I’d like this one to revive for me and give me a return kiss.”
“When have you become so greasy? Don’t tell me it comes with age.” I jumped on his waist laughing, pressing my thighs around it, kissing his lustful lips with everything I had. Feeling his breathe was making me feel alive, his hands were holding me tightly, imprisoning my body in his embrace.
Chansung pulled away, still holding me tight. “You know, it took some years to get rid of that silver out of my system, to fight the pain of the tragic loss, but there was something I couldn’t get out of my head no matter what.” He kissed me again, slowly this time, his tongue brushing against my fangs. Then, he grazed my earlobe with his teeth and whispered. “I love you.”
