A lot of people make "events" on facebook when they're looking for a new housemate, but that doesn't help if you're not friends with Melbourne people on facebook. Sometimes they're looking for someone indefinitely, sometimes they want to sublet their room while they go overseas. Subletting is better because then you don't have to worry about looking for furniture!
People also advertise on gumtree and craigslist, but i don't really trust those websites.. Or there are housing noticeboards up at places like Friends of the Earth cafe. Which would be good for you, I reckon, since you'll probably want to live in the trendy north. Not just because it might be closer to school, but also because it's trendy.
Haha thanks for the offer :D I was thinking next year though ... I've been told Footscray, Brunswick and Hawthorn are areas worth checking out for suburban houses...student friendly apparently?
Check http://melbourne.gumtree.com.au share listings (it's fine, I've used it loads of times, the only danger is if you're a poor judge of character, but I do recommend meeting people in person before deciding!). Sometimes people mention that short term stays are fine, other times you can email and ask them if 4-6 months is okay.
I recommend you plan to come down here a week or two before your course starts and check into a decent hostel, and schedule in-person inspections of sharehouses / meeting potential housemates for that time.
