Does anyone know if you need to be a paid attendee at Aussiecon 4 in order to go to the Masquerade ball tonight? The website isn't helpful, and I deserve a headpunch for not thinking that this might have been good to look up *months ago*.

I'm attending, and none of the print materials directly or explicitly answer your questions.

However, the Masquerade is an Aussiecon event, and you cannot attend any Aussiecon event without an Aussiecon membership and membership badge. "Your membership badge is your ticket into the convention, and without it entry will be refused."

Yes you need to buy a day pass. Note that you cannot count on Registration being open if you come only for the Masquerade tonight, ie. you should try to get there this afternoon to sort out the day pass.

If you think about it, it makes sense - they face significant costs in putting on the Masquerade, of course they're not going to make that available to random street walk-ins who haven't given them any money. :)
