Without ruining it, there is a great deal of talk about paganism and female element and how it's been the goal of the leaders in Christianity to wipe it out and replace pagan/female with Christian/male dominated religion and a secret society to protect the knowledge of the pagan ways... but anyway, you can see, just from that brief little bit why it would be so controversial. Much like the movie 'Stigmata'...just shaking things up a bit. Great book and I highly recommend it. I'm still reading it and I'd recommend:D
