Finished The Yiddish Policemen's Union last night, and I rather enjoyed it. I have to say, though, I don't know how non-Jews can really appreciate that book; yeah, the Yiddish is pretty much understandable from context, but part of why the book is so funny comes from an understanding of Jewish culture and identity that I'm not sure one can

I knew I read "The Yiddish Policemen's Union" based on someone's rec on LJ, but I'd completely lost track of who it was, lol.

Yeah, my only knowledge of Jewish culture comes from the Rabbi Small detective stories *g*, but I figured if I enjoyed those, I would enjoy this. And I did!

Until I got to the end. It's been a few months, so I don't really remember much, but I remember feeling let down at the end. I think I read the last pages about 3 times, since I obviously didn't get it at all the first time. By the third time around, I understood it better, but still didn't like it all that much. Which, I suppose, just proves that the build-up was fantastic!

Definitely not a waste of my time, though. The whole AU aspect of the book was fascinating to begin with. I'm not sure if I've ever actually read a book in that genre before.

:D Totally not the first person I persuaded to read that book.

My issue with the end was that it just stopped, and I always hate that.

I've read some other historical AUs, but this was definitely my favorite. Probably because of the Jew connection, of course, but also it's very hard to get them right.

Right, it did seem to end really abruptly, and not terribly satisfactorily, but the rest of the book was totally captivating. *nods*
