1st hand experience with viral growth - iRead

On June 6th I had posted about iRead. We had just about launched the application then & we were at a few hundred users.
As of now iRead has 25k users!
So if I dont make much sense below, please bear with me - I am still in shock & euphoria :)

iRead sounds very interesting. Yet, I'm curious to know what made you go with MySQL in the first place. Several applications get built on the basis of lower-end-of-the-spectrum usage estimates. When they launch (not in a limited registration mode, but open to a wider audience), the excreta hits the roof.

This is not necessarily a rant against using MySQL in such 'slashdotted' type production environments, but I've been on the receiving end of such situations far too often for comfort!

I am not usre I followed :)

I have only used MySQL as a good, cheap DB when deploying large systems.
Yes you soon have to worry about the pains of partitioning & sometimes with newer versions the pains of server crashes, but despite those its definitely easy to use & handle.

Friends have been happy with PostGres, I am yet to dirty my hands in that.
