    people's (academic) blocks.
  • I need to read Max Weber. T_T

  • Nagata Hiroko is a fascinating figure.
  • I should read more about 60s Japan.

Very true! It got really sticky here because one camp was arguing really abstract philosophical stuff and the other group was about genocide/rape/war. There was a real disjunct. But it was productive on a meta level just seeing that dynamic.

There are baby versions of Bob Marley songs. Apparently these do not include "I shot the sheriff." Sadness. My brother and sister-in-law own this CD (I think it's called "B is for Bob," and Ziggy Marley was involved in its making), and on my most recent visit with them we were playing it in the car. As "Could You Be Loved" came on, I remembered that it contains (gasp!) profanity (the line "so go to hell if what you're thinking is not right"), and waited with great interest to see how this was going to be handled. Sure enough, there was a drop-out on the word "hell ( ... )

My three-year-old nephew was quite into it, and could be heard singing along to an extent that surprised me - he seems to have already memorized some of the lyrics. That's the power of Bob for ya!

LOL you're awesome. One of the profs told us about it, someone asked him why not just play his kid the originals and he said he tried but his kid couldn't "groove to it" for developmental reasons--though the baby seems to enjoy blues and salsa. I suppose reggue might be too subdued? I don't know. I think this is pretty awesome though, beats Old McDonald songs for sure!

I actually real a lot a lot from Jezebel, but never comment. More than anything I think it's just the laziness of logging in. One has to do that right? And also the forums seem big and intimidating to me :) I check out the site a lot and love their links though!

Actually, the "baby versions" in many cases are quite close to the originals - the main difference is that some of them have cute, non-reggae-ish instrumentation added. Flutes, for instance! The melodies themselves, I guess, are so simple and classic that toddlers can dig them too. Each kid to his own, though - I'm impressed to hear of a blues-lovin' baby. If I tell my brother this, he will probably attempt to wean my nephew onto Black Sabbath next.

Yeah, you do have to log in at Jez. I'm lazy too and always forget my login info, so I just stay logged in constantly. The forums are new since my day and I don't understand the protocols for them myself. Plus hashtags that commenters can use as well as editors - wha?? My eventual Jez re-entry is going to require extensive research, for shizz. :)

I'm kinda Weber > Marx

I kind of recoil at both (though Marx is a necessary evil *sigh*). Oh god political theory. Not enough DNW in the world...

yeah, I'm really not into politics, but I like that Weber maintains more of an observational stance than Marx does. Guess that's my non-interference as much as possible anthropologist side talking.

Oh good that intimidates me less about having to approach him. I was given one essay where he apparently argues that the state is always on the verge of being violent or something like that.
