space, the final frontier - of all our endless feelings

Usually I go for a while between updates because I have nothing new to share and life is much the same. This early May stretch was a strange anomaly of running about! But it was good, albeit tiring.

So let's talk about STAR TREK. I finally saw it today and I have many feelings. ARE YOU READY TO TALK ABOUT IT?

So for the longest time, I fought tooth and nail to NOT read about speculations about the movie (including what Ben Cum was playing, though I am aware that he is the villain), because I always want to start with a fresh slate. The most preparation I've done for the movie is one: Watch the trailer and two: Watch the first movie. That's it. That's how much I don't want ANYTHING to give me pre-conceived expectations for the movie ( ... )

....Still despite all my gripes about it, I still enjoyed the hell out of it. Seriously, allow me my cheesiness but Spock may be the face of Star Trek but Kirk's totally the heart man, and Chris Pine did a fantastic job. And all the other crew are just precious- SCOTTY and his "GODDAMIT CAP'N I WAS AWAY FROM THIS SHIP FOR ONE DAY...", MCCOY and his "I'M A DOCTOR NOT A ", CHEKHOV and his ( ... )

Awww no I LOVE THIS EPIC COMMENT. As someone who didn't grow up with the original Star Trek, it's definitely good to see their (varied) reactions to this movie and how they felt it compared to the original. I agree that it fell a bit heavy on the action/explosions/fighting side and I would've liked even more emotional resonance and relationship interaction and possibly more weight on the ethics elements. But those are personal preferences too, because while I enjoy some amount of exciting explosions and shiny things, I tend to be a character and relationship fan ( ... )

I also want to add that I definitely heard all the hoopla/speculation around Khan when we saw the infamous hand on hand through glass scene in the trailer - which is why people were positive it'd be Khan as the villain, right. And I think due to all the discussion of Spock's death and the sequel, I really thought they'd "kill" Kirk off in this movie and spend the third one rescuing him somehow, but I guess that doesn't make sense because that means there wouldn't be nearly as much Chris Pine in the third movie and he is one of the major icons of this reboot series. And it was probably better to wrap up this story and Kirk's "death" so that they could all be together when facing the Klingons in the next movie.
