and never mind that noise you heard

Alexander is not a man given to paranoia easily. He worries about his friends when he can't do anything about it, but generally tends to care for people who can care for themselves, and there's not often much cause for it ( Read more... )

If the world has ended at least Henry's dressed for it! No--sorry Alex, it isn't that bad, especially since he does wear his own ...everything with more confidence lately. This ideally will not have to come in handy in Gilboa, but hey, Alex has always had the bearing of a dude who kind of singlehandedly ruled significant chunks of the world a while, so. These things are only to be used to their advantage.

"He'll probably be annoyed with us, you know," remarks Dr. Jekyll, offhandedly, in the hopes that Jack is just vacationing or something (he's totally not). "At least--that'd be nice. But yes, ready."

"I will be delighted if he's annoyed with us." ... Because, well.

And since they're ready, off they go.

It's mid-afternoon in Shiloh, and bright but cool. It'll give them enough time to wander around in the daylight, but if they end up needing to sneak around, they won't have to wait an eternity for nightfall. (Not that Alex foresees any covert operations, but he's a 'prepared for anything' sort of guy.) He timed their appearance well, and no one else is around in this corner of the park.

"Here were are," he says, tucking away his PINpoint and looking around them, making sure he remembers which way is which. He's only been in this city once, and briefly, but his memory isn't anything to sneeze at. "Surface streets should be this way." He stars walking, looking at Henry as he does. "Maybe we'll get lucky and bump into him getting some air." No.

"A thin veneer of cautious optimism paired with realistic expectations. I like it, it makes us sound like a Word War II telegram."

Except for the realism, and his face says he clearly does not like it, but there is not much to be done except for what they are doing; Henry wonders if this is strange for Alex, he is used to feeling reasonably powerless in his own setting, but it's not so for the man he follows a little ways behind. (And it feels strange to follow to, where once it would have been the most natural thing in the world, but--Alex has been here before.)

"It reminds me of New York," he observes of the city once they're at the proper level to do so. "If Jack's--when we find him we can tell him we were looking for Carnegie Hall, or something. I think there's a joke in that."

Strange enough to annoy him, but not to unsettle him. He's worked through enough problems in this life to not let himself be thrown off-balance by anything short of (extensively pre-meditated torture-murder--) catastrophe. His temper has finally settled to a place that's hard to rile, and he handles this with some measure of private irony.

"Does he know what Carnegie Hall is?" He's looking up as they talk, moving a bit like he owns the place and still managing to seem relaxed. Grim, war-like determination won't help them, here. If it's a mission, it's a recon one.

Out on the sidewalk, he looks over at Henry when the other man comes up beside him. "Do you drink coffee?"
