Museum and Historical Society

So, as of today, I am a financial member of the L__________h Historical Society, and a volunteer at the Museum. I did my first 3 hour Volunteer stint today at the museum. It was just data entry, something I did for a job for five years or more, so nothing strenuous or scary. I was entering data from a ledger of shares from the township of Maleny ( Read more... )

I did some data entry in an archive a few years back - I was taking the data from old presbyterian marriage records and putting it all into an excel spreadsheet. All the records were handed written on paper yellowed with age (and grime and water and who knows what) and written in ink that was now green and purple and other odd colors - and all in formal script. It took me AGES and AGES (a couple of months at least) to do all the ledgers I needed to do, and there wouldn't have been that many of them (I wouldn't even estimate how many, but not over fifty, probably a lot less). I would work solidly for about four hours a day at it. So I think six pages in three hours is probaby a pretty good rate - getting data off old records is a painstaking labor of love, and yes, accuracy is more important that speed. Also, just a hint - if you can't make out what the full word is, don't guess. Just put in a '?' for the letters you don't know - because five years down the track a researcher might come along, not know that you've made a guess, and ( ... )

Also, just a hint - if you can't make out what the full word is, don't guess. Just put in a '?' for the letters you don't know - because five years down the track a researcher might come along, not know that you've made a guess, and take it as gospel and be sent off on a wild goose chase. Heee.

Oh good hint! I'll have to see if I can remember which ones I guessed next time to fix them, although I should be able to find them easily enough on the ledger.

Cool! I have looked at maps and lists with all the selector's names on them in the past :)

You are doing something really useful there!

The hidden word looks like Crikey! Are you working on old Croc Hunter diaries?

Seriously, it sounds fantastic and writers looking for historical facts will bless your name one day.

LOL! I thought that, too. But I didn't put that in. It gave me a smile, though because the area where I live is Croc Hunter country. I am just a few minutes drive from Australia Zoo.
