Unforgettable Fathers

Last weekend I rewatched the BBC's production of 'Wives and Daughters' by Elizabeth Gaskell and I was reminded once again what a fascinating a wonderful character Squire Hamley is. I have almost always (with a notable exception) got on well with partners' parents. My mother, however, is somewhat terrifying and has never really got to know any of my boyfriends (in fact, has met only a couple) so I don't know what sort of relationship she'd have with anyone I settled down with. Those that she has met still seem to live in fear of her!

I wish to paraphrase Mr. Bennet here but the quote eludes me, "such squeamish youths" I think, basically aren't worth it.

I get on well with mothers in general but have had problems with dads, not major ones but just never felt totally accepted really, which is probably why I notice it in literature.

I'm getting less well read all the time so I'm not help on the literary angle, but man does my father in law rub me the wrong way. he's just so... brainless.
