Guh, I had a bad night (not awful, just bad). For some reason I was stuck on Twilight, and how is it possible that it is so popular? I went into town the other day and a whole shelf in the four shelf sci-fi/fantasy book section of one of the bookstores was dedicated to the bloody series. Poster thingies on the

I would recommend books by Robin Hobb even though you said not to mention multi-part books (sorry!); she has written three trilogies in a series that I love. It starts with the Farseer trilogy, with Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and Assassin's Quest. As for GLBT characters, well - it's a little hard to describe, but the person who is arguably the love of the main character's life is another dude. Romance isn't really the main focus of the books though. They're really brilliant though, I would definitely recommend them <3

My other favourite book is Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife. It's fabulous.

also, I love that love triangle too - the other guy was George, I think!

Yes! George!!!! I knew it started with G, but I couldn't get past Gavin or Greg, hehe. I think that my flatmate has the Robin hobb ones, so I may borrow them, I think I read a few ages ago. I will keep an eye out for The Time Travellers Wife, am going Second hand book hunting today, thanks!
