Essential oils are made by distilling the oil out of whatever it is made of (for example, lavendar, cloves or thyme). Pure essential oils tend to range from moderately to highly expensive for relatively small amounts. This is because it takes a hell of a lot of cloves to get enough oil to do anything with. Since they are usually used diluted and you don't need much anyway, they can still be fairly economical.
