My less liberal, old-fashioned side rears its ugly head

I guess I just think that if you're going to have five kids, you should raise them and not run for vice president. Now, I don't know how much of a full-time mom Hillary ever was, but she only had one child who was grown before she entered national politics on her own. Yes, I know, Barack and Michelle have two young daughters of their own, and one ( Read more... )

You know, I keep thinking that her baby is only 4 months old - she's barely hit dealing with his disabilities, I would think. I don't know about the whole working Mom thing; I mean, it's not been MY choice, but there are times I wonder if I'd set my children a better example of industry if I had.

She's an interesting character, but yeah, it's hard to imagine that being mayor of someplace like Ipswich would be that much of a qualification for the presidency. (Weirdly, my brother thinks she's way more qualified than BO.) And it's puzzling, too, in that McC has now lost the right to criticize Obama's level of experience, which was his greatest argument, and instead attempted to position himself as the maverick candidate of change, something his record really doesn't support. My Dad thinks that he's given away the election right here, with a see through cynical ploy to court Hilary voters. I'm not that sanguine, but I do hope people see through it.

I agree with your dad about the ploy - it's so obvious I can't believe he even did it. I know I'm cynical, but I can't help but see what's going on here ( ... )

I still want to be the person who raises my kids, don't get me wrong; I just wonder, you know, about the path not taken.

I think that the VP role varies from one administration to the next. Obviously, Cheney had a very active role in the Bush presidency, including foreign policy. Otherwise, they mostly just fly in helicopters over disaster areas looking grim.

And you've seen the NAMES of her five children, right?

OMG, yes - I was just thinking that one should never vote for anyone who names her son "Track", never mind Bristol, Piper or Willow. Track is definitely the worst of them all.

What about Trig? Isn't there one named Trig???

Track is bad though..Those poor kids have probably been teased mercilessly.

What terrifies me is that such a ridiculously unqualified person would be president if the old man croaks. Obama isn't the most experienced person in the world, but he at least has experience in Washington. How the hell is this chick going to transfer her experience in hickville to the White House? I can imagine her being a decent president. Biden, on the other hand...

McCain is a dumbass, basically.

I'm not at all interested in voting for McCain-Palin, but I think that her ability to raise a family and run for office is not an issue. Off the top of my head, Lincoln and Kennedy both had young children living in the White House with them. I guess the type of people who are going to run for high office are going to be the type of people with lots of hired help for childcare regardless. Either way I think it's unfair to suggest that a woman has to chose a family or a career.

It may not be fair, and you may not like it, but it's the truth - kids need their parents. People should not bother having kids if they're just going to hire someone to raise them. Kids are full time and a choice sometimes has to be made between certain careers and raising a family because ultimately, one or the other will suffer. Barack Obama also has small children, but he has only two and no babies and no special needs. Palin should put her national political aspirations on hold until her kids are grown, period. They are going to need a lot more than she can give over the next four to eight years. Unfortunately, some people are very caught up in themselves and must feed their own egos with high-powered careers, and their kids suffer for it.
