School stuff

Not too much to update about today. We went to the school this morning, and I sat back and watched completely mystified as the teacher tried to demonstrate to the kids how to do 2-digit subtraction completely incorrectly. She understood enough to know that in the ones column if the top number is smaller than the bottom, you need to borrow from the ( Read more... )

Hi Meg!
Honestly...do the teachers there get degrees or do they have special circumstances?(like whoever wants to teach, can?) Maybe it's a good thing you are there! At least they will have been taught something correct! You are going to be such a good teacher cuz YOU CARE!
Gosh it's down to days now! You homesick yet?
I may be temporarily unemployed soon!(be still my happy heart)We are going to be going through a remodel so I don't know how long it's going to take. But hey! summers coming, I'm sure I'll find stuff to keep busy.
Have a great day! love ya, mum W.

The teachers at the Ark are not really teachers at all. Most of them are living there (it's sort of a refuge for people who need help financially, emotionally, or with addictions) and are working as teachers in exchange for living there. Most of them have little or no training at all.

Are you excited to be temporarily unemployed or are you sad about it? I'm sure you'll find ways to keep busy!

Hi Megan

Well it's sounds like most of the world is dealing with allergies right now. I know the pollen count in G.R. is usually the highest in our state, but I honestly only know a few people right now who don't seem to be affected! We are all taking turns at work, I've never seen such absenteeism since I've been there. I have supplied sinus medicine to just about everyone. The other day I heard on the news that somewhere near Washington the usual pollen count for this time of year is somewhere around 20 times higher than at other times, but this year it was something like 545 times higher than usual. Can't imagine how you'd ever live there! Did you ever try that new Benadryl that I got you yet?

Just a quick note on the teacher and subtraction. I wonder if the old standby of counting with buttons, or beans or something and doing addition and subtraction in that very elementary sense might be something to offer?

Well talk to ya again tommorrow.
Love you
Mom

Sounds like I should be glad I'm not home right now then. The allergy problem hasn't been that horrible here, mainly just that one day. Were you talking about Washington state or D.C.? And I'm not sure if I tried the Benedryl or not. I've been taking some form of it, but I don't know if it's the kind you got me or not.

As for the subtraction, they do that with popsicle sticks sometimes, but it's more the actual procedure of writing it out on paper that she doesn't seem to understand.
