In the Hunt: Unauthorized Essays on Supernatural (Anthology, TBR in March)

Feb 16, 2009 14:48

This is a collection of essays that covers the first three seasons of the series. I will restate my disclaimer from when I started season 3 so that I would have seen all the material covered in the book, which is that I used to be a fan of Supernatural but no longer am, largely due to issues regarding the show and gender. As such, I read the book ( Read more... )

I am offended at hearing the summary of the Impala essays, as SHE IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT. D<

I have huge amounts of meta deep inside me concerning the Impala; it's the most important symbol (and perhaps character) in the show (at least to me. I'm sure others have different opinions).

My problem with "the Impala is mom and Dad passed Mom down to Dean and it's a symbol of manly bonding" is that, if it's Mom, then what are we supposed to make of the scene where Dean is beating the *hem* out of it?

It's also interesting in light of the actual 'origin' of the Impala in S4, which I assume these essays predate. In that respect it's more a symbol of 'home.'

I still would like to read this if you don't mind passing it on.

Was about to PM you saying to PM me your address!

And yeah, there are a few things that I know S4 has already contradicted in one way or another, which actually makes me feel bad for the writers, because the readers will be reading it as "That's wrong!" especially if they don't realize how long these things take.

This is a post by one of the contributors to the book (I gather) responding to a review (linked in the post), which is kind of unintentionally hilarious because it seems to insist that only a True Fan can have anything insightful to say about the show.

I'm especially fond of the author bio response that's seems to dismiss one of what I thought was the better essays because it mentions Buffy and men, and then the next praises Jacob "Supernatural is feminist because there are evil women who pervert the relationmship between Sam and Dean" Clifton.

Yeah, I found it kind of silly that she just dismisses the essay because she hasn't seen Buffy. So... okay, maybe she couldn't get anything out of it, but it simply means she's unable to evaluate the quality of the essay.

Well, it's also noteworthy that that essay points out, you know, flaws in the show. If I look closer, I may see that trend. A couple others seemed to completely gloss over what I thought was a central point. (For example, Carol Poole's essay had a heavy emphasis on why women would want to watch something where women burning to death on the ceiling was a central plotpoint, but the reviewer skips that part.)
