"An intelligent, capable heroine who isn’t Special and would really rather be left alone, and a narrative that isn’t easy on her. The romance is interesting and well developed, but background to Mel’s growth and journey."
Well if you don't mind a heroine that is a bit more passive than Mel, with good reason, but still has lots of adventures and manages to get abducted three times without becoming a complete victim (I thought), you might want to get Sherwood Smith's "The Trouble with Kings" out form Samhain in trade paperback, and of course as an ebook, right now.
Some reviews likened it a lot to Crown Duel, and others found the heroine too passive.
Thanks for posting this. I always look forward to your reviews/recs!
Patricia McKillip is one of my absolute favorite authors. I've never been disappointed in any of her books.
I have Midnight Never Come in my TBR pile. I have 2 of the Promethean Age books (the Shakespeare ones; I read the other 2 already). I'm looking forward to all of them!
One that I read this year that I thought you might like and can't remember if you did read it was The Veil of Gold by Kim Wilkins. I really enjoyed the writing itself in that book.

I think I'll start my 2009 with this series, which sounds FANTASTIC! Thank you for the rec. :)
