The Chains that You Refuse is a collection of 22 genre short stories, covering all ends of the spectrum. With the exception of high fantasy, I think pretty much every subset of the sff genre is represented. Unfortunately, that also means that there’s no real unifying theme to the book.

This sounds like something I might like, especially since I've never read Bear before.

...okay, I admit it, I am just fascinated by the idea of "sci-fi meets genderbent Kit Marlowe."

I think she was in her late 30s here (at least, as I interpretted it...I don't remember her age being stated) but that was the name.
