I really liked these books. Apparently there was supposed to be a fourth which may or may not be written in the future from what I've heard.

And like you already pointed out WHY did it always have to be Tess's peril. And she hasn't lived with her parents for most of her life so WHY THIS RIGHT NOW?????
I couldn't handle it.

She can become queen in her own good time, much like other queens *grumbles*

I guess it's just that I expected it pretty much from the start. If one of your heroes is the heir to the throne, than at some point in the story, they'll have to take over. There are certain genre rules that irritate me, and certain ones that I just accept.
