It's a pretty common storytelling trick to juxtapose things like that, to contrast one with the other.

Also, I commented on Tumblr how while I love this show, it's also hard to feel TOO much emotion when tragedy strikes, because there's a giant cosmic reset button built into the very show itself...

I was going to say im familiar with the general storytelling trick, just that thoseare the only two things ive seen do it with sex/death, but then a show i'm watching now did the same thing, so maybe i was just watching the wrong (right?) shows.
