I adore Chihayafuru and have since its first episode aired and I have started to read the manga. I really wish it would be licensed here but no company seems to be willing to give it a chance. That being said I wouldn't say its fandom is that small. It's pretty well regarded on quite a few anime sites I visit.
I want to read the manga, but the places I've found it appear to have chunks missing. And yeah, US publishers are very leery, I think, about Jose. Sadly.
I think that, for Josei, it has a big fandom? But tiny in terms of fandom in general, and middling for anime, even after removing the huge fandoms from the mix. There are 31 fics at AO3, almost half of which were written as a gift for someone else (probably not all exchanges, though) and I don't think there's been a single time I've checked the tumblr tag and had to go back a page to see all the new posts.
So I guess it's perspective? There are a number in my circle who like it, but my circle of anime fen is mostly people prone to liking something like it, and of the anime I requested for the exchange, it probably has the largest fandom, but I think it's small in the grander scheme of things.
What anime sites are talking about it, though? (I admit to being out of the loop outside of sites I get stuff from.)
Well I know it won anime of the year over at Anime Suki for its first season. And it won best drama this year. It is well liked over on the ANN forums too so I was talking about places like that. And it is one of the most requested licenses for Kodansha (but they refuse for a number of reasons basically Josei, sports, and ongoing a deadly combination). So I was talking about places like that. Of course it is no Attack on Titan. I do follow the tumblr tag but I haven't looked up fanfiction. It's not the type of series I'd read fanfiction for.
Yeah the manga is missing a lot that is because the translators decided to start translating from where the manga left off with the anime. I guess they might eventually go back and translate those other chapters but now they are pretty current with the manga in Japan. If you watched the anime and read the manga starting at chapter 93 you aren't missing anything story wise.
