 Should I rewatch the Rose of Versailles anime before reading the manga for the first time, or after?

I think after - as you are saying it would be a rewatch. So you don't have those memories quite so fresh and can see the source material for what it is - and then have a better idea of where the animated version does its own thing (if it does... I can't remember. I read that scanlation years ago...)

After. The manga is def. not the same, and with fresh memories you might feel annoyed by the changes you'll read. After you have a base about the original, with more information to build the story of the anime on.
