I finished the show on like a super high, like "THAT AS AMAZING I'M ALL WRUNG OUT AND FUZZY AHHH"

and then the more I come down from it, the more I'm like, wait. I think I actually have some problems with how it all worked out.

I kept expecting Korra to achieve avatar state while she was fighting Amon. I was a little disappointed that she achieved it while crying by herself.

It's an odd mixture in my head.

But basically, it feels like Korra achieved avatar state because the previous avatars felt bad for her or something. I mean, I know that's not actually what happened, but that's what it FELT like.

Korra's character arc wasn't that she needed to learn how to fight, though. It was that she needed to learn how to reflect. She never went avatar state in battle because in battle she never felt like she needed it. (How that fits with the "avatar state as a defense mechanism" canon, I can't say.) But at the end of the series, when she'd lost everything that made her identity, she was finally able to get in touch with her "spiritual side". I don't know about you, but when I'm suffering I know myself better than when I'm not. It fits with the Buddha story- the character is brought to their lowest point and is changed by it. Which is pretty much what Aang said.

I like the interpretation of the final scene where Korra's tear falling over the cliff signifies her contemplating suicide.

In that reading, she pulls back because she decides that she still has worth, even if she failed her people and lost her identity as the specialest snowflake bender. That spiritual progress is what allows her to finally see Aang.

Well I only few fanart when other people put it into my view because I don't browse the fandom except in a few places, but I've seen more Asami/Iroh shipping than Korra/Iroh.

I too would have preferred something less rushed for Korra getting her bending back, but I did enjoy the scene. I figure it had to be different for Korra. Her identity is so built on being the Avatar, and then so tied into bending because that's what she was taught the Avatar was - as she was taught to be the Avatar for most of her life and couldn't do the other Avatar things - that I really believe losing that identity would be her lowest point. Aang didn't earn his Avatar States that he couldn't control. Of course, since it was rushed, it would have been better for her to get the uncontrollable State too, just like Aang, as a sign to her that she was still an Avatar and could become fully-realized with work.

It's good to know I wasn't the only person having flashbacks to The Little Mermaid during that scene! Especially during the part where the prince General Iroh is thrown from his under-attack ship and Korra has to save him from drowning.
