I think Merlin turns up briefly in the first book but leaves/disappears soon after Terence and Gawain arrive in Camelot.

Yeah, I was trying to remember if he was there, or only the guy who raised Terrence. (Who was very Merlin-like, but I don't think he actually was Merlin.)
