Sexploitation in DC's reboot.

You know, I really do usually try to withhold final judgement on something until I've actually read/watched it.  But there are times I feel it is completely valid to be 100% judgmental about something with no intentions of ever checking it out.

Meanwhile, I watched the liveaction Taiwanese adaptation of Hayate the ( Read more... )

The only thing I've seen Starfire in is the Teen Titans cartoon so this new incarnation of her is just... disgusting and sad.

And Catwoman... the saddest thing is we've gone from Bruce admitting she's the only woman who has ever opened his heart/whom he loves and trusts to Catwoman in the issue thinking "I don't know who Batman is and I don't care" and then having fanfiction-y sex with him. It's almost as bad as All-Star Batman and Robin.

Sigh.

The only other issue I've read of the new 52 is Batwoman, which I enjoyed. I've heard good things about Wonder Woman.

I haven't followed batbooks in years and years, but...SIGH. And I remember the Batman and Robin scans and Frank Millers loving description of how to best exploit women in panel layouts.

i'm hopeful about WW, and may check out Batwoman.

I would definitely recommend picking up Batwoman: Elegy if you're at all interested in Batwoman -- it has amazing art and a great story! The bits with her origin story are especially well done.

I know! I don't know if they dubbed her voice or not, but I thought she was very good in it. (I actually haven't seen any of her kdramas, but she's pretty popular on my list.)

BTW, you'd probably like it.

I never cared for the original Hayate, but I do love Park Shin Hye... Hmmm...

I think it works way better with the characters being older (he's 21 and she's 18, and the other main characters are in that range) and there's way less fanservice (really only a bit in the first ep) than I remember in the manga.

Yeah I haven't read those issues but I've seen enough scans to know this looks TERRIBLE. The whole reboot has pretty damn horrible tracks so far.

At least WW is supposedly better than some promo stuff made it sound.

Is it? The reviews have seen of it have been a bit mixed.

The AV Club reviews were pretty positive and the art looks great. She looks pretty tough for a girl in her undies.

Other titles in the reboot are apparently much better, but yeah.

From what I've heard, that HEAVILY depends on the title. A good chunk of the male-or-team main character books are apparently okay-ish but extremely gore-stuffed, while the female-main-character books seem to be horrible throughout. Admittedly I haven't looked at them personally, but I refuse to for Cassandra Cain-related reasons. And I don't think I'm missing out.

But I'm generally enjoying Linkara's comments on the new books because he's very good at pointing out narrative and sexist bullshit all around.
