New Dragon Gate Inn (released in the US as Dragon Inn) is one of the odder wuxia movies I've come across.

Never let it be said that Tsui Hark does not believe in the power of femslash. I mean, he did make a movie that's basically about Maggie Cheung and Joey Wong seductively writhing, sometimes against each other.

And this is why I <3 Tsui Hark FOREVER. (And dearly wish he'd been the one to direct the live-action A:TLA movie...*sighs*)

One thing of note is that, while there was a male gaze element in both Green Snake and the Chinese Ghost story movies (though way than than you'd expect) it was still largely focused on them and not as much the POV of the males who may or may not be looking at them. In New Dragon Gate Inn there actually really isn't a male gaze element at all.

Incidentally, have you seen the new remake of Chinese Ghost Story with Liu Yi Fei in the Joey Wong role? I have it, but haven't watched yet.

Nope, not yet! Is this the newish TV drama or a theatrical release? If it's the drama I heard good things about it from a friend, but...round tuits, etc. *waves hands about vaguely*

I meant the theatrical release, though I have the TV drama waiting for me, too. And the animation, for that matter.
