Fringe: Season 1

I’ve had Fringe recommended to me for a while, but never got around to it. Then I started watching the first season at about the same time there was a literal explosion of listies discovering it.

This is, in short, an exercise in slightly-morbid geekery disguising itself as a procedural. Ok, maybe not an exercise in geekery, but it is very geeky ( ( Read more... )

YES!

Oh man, I'm almost vibrating for you to get to S3, because if you thought Olivia was badass before... it gets to the point where they're literally giving her these EPIC action sequences EVERY EPISODE where she just KEEPS OUTDOING HERSELF.

My favorite thing about her is that the writers know what they're doing. I mean, they know exactly why she's awesome, and they continually build on that. When was the last time you were able to watch a show without worrying about genderfail?

FRINGE. ♥ ♥ ♥

I've been watching Pretty Little Liars! It's like a world where genderfail doesn't exist.

Except Aria's romantic plotline, though that's general fail, as opposed to genderfail.

It gets better halfway through season 2 and the characters have to actually own up to things and are FAR less jack-assy. :)

I'd say they're all far less jack-assy by the end of s1? But there's still room for improvement.

I think in the pilot they wanted to show how Olivia was A WOMAN BAMFING IN A MAN'S WORLD, and hamfistedly made Peter and Broyles emphasize that. Then afterward they realized that it came off as MY CHAUVINISM IS PAESTED ON YEY and dropped it. B/c srsly it does not add up. Broyles does not seem like the kind of guy who would refer to rape as a "small lapse in judgment," and despite Charlie referring to said rapist as Broyle's "best friend," when he actually shows up in the show Broyles doesn't even seem to like him. And Peter, man, even the actor didn't sound convinced when he kept saying "honey" and "sweetheart".

I don't know about "small lapse in judgment" (which was just ew) but I think Broyles also has an all-or-nothing attitude when it comes to his friends. Like, I'm pretty sure Olivia could go to Biloxi and slaughter a few old church ladies and Broyles would cover it up for her, because that's just the way he is. When he's with you, he's with you 100%.

Oh yeah, totally. 8D But you'd think if he was really friends with that dbag his papa bear tendencies would still extend to him somewhat, even if he chose to protect Olivia over him. Instead what we saw was pretty raw dislike.

I think after about 2 or 3eps after the pilot when Peter's and Broyle's characterizations seemed subtly but distinctly different from the pilot, I just sort of pretended that shit never happened. (Well, and I also had the suspicion that Broyles's antagonism towards Olivia in the pilot had more to do with seeing how determined she was than with him actually buying the shit he was saying. Still pretty repugnant behavior, though, even if I'm right.)

I think when dbag started interfering with Fringe division -- putting them all at risk just to get back at Olivia -- that was when Broyles drew his line in the sand. When it was dbag vs everything Broyles had ever worked for, dbag didn't stand a chance.

had more to do with seeing how determined she was than with him actually buying the shit he was saying.

Agreed! Olivia's determination is totally a pain in the ass... unless she's on your side, and then she's exactly the person you need to get the job done. ♥

I keep telling people they need to give the show half a season before they make a judgement. Olivia is awesome, but the show really comes into its own about halfway through the first season.

The show needs more Astrid.

But it is pretty fun for marathoning. I have discovered that trying to watch week to week leaves me apathetic and uninterested.

(erm, also, the first half of season two has Olivia... sort of over-shadowed. It's annoying. But it might just have been my read of it? I don't know)
