This is the 10th Dirk & Steele book, and I clearly need to reread the older ones sometime soon, because I seem to have forgotten a lot of the mythology. Not because it’s convoluted (I actually kind of really love it), but because there’s so much of it, and Liu doesn’t really slow down or recap a lot. I love the Hunter Kiss series of books by Liu. I haven't given the Dirk & Steele ones a try. If they are cracktastic should I give them a go? It sounds like it is the full on complement of creatures. I have this idea it is about a detective agency. I am probably wrong though. Do you recommend them to other people?

Yeah, the characters are part of a detective agency, though it's more a cover for investigating paranormal conspiracies and sheanigans. I'm pretty fond of it.
