Noel Streatfeild’s “Shoes” books (many of which were renamed to carry the “Shoes” title) are largely-independent books focusing on children and the performing arts. Ballet Shoes is still one of my ultimate comfort reads. I've been meaning to hunt down the others for years, but the only other one I actually remember reading is Movie Shoes (I think?) which is the one where Pauline is an adult mentoring a couple of kids in a film of The Secret Garden. Unless that's actually a different one.

I haven't read Movie Shoes (it isn't in print that I know of) but Theater Shoes shows us what the Fossils are up to during the war.

holy crap, I think I've read those. The titles sound familiar to me, at any rate.

I was just gonna start reading these, so your review is very timely! As for the out-of-print ones, it looks like many were published under Dell's Yearling imprint in the mid-1980s so you may be able to get them either at your library or via interlibrary loan. That's how I'm gonna try to acquire 'em.

Hi. I ran into this post looking for I can't remember what? Icons, maybe? I'm only eight years late...

I've been reading her novels, at least as many as I can get my hands on. I've had the best luck with my municipal library; I live in a large city, and even so many of her books are reference only, meaning I would have to travel downtown and read them on site. So far, in general circulation I've been able to read Children on the Top Floor, When the Sirens Wailed, which is set in WWII, Circus Shoes, Skating Shoes, and Movie Shoes. I think she's wonderful.

There is a publisher in the UK that is planning to re-release some of her titles later this year. Virago, maybe?

Cheers,
Wendy
