Sylvester is one of my favourite Heyer novels. Yes, Sylvester comes off as a total bastard at the beginning but Phoebe is so good with him and she totally demolishes him and kicks the conceit out of him ... which is more romantic and lovable than it sounds :D

The nephew is annoying though - I'm not sure if he's supposed to be endearing or not :D

See, i think it sounds completely lovable and romantic.

I think he was meant to be both annoying and endearing, which rarely works with fictional kids.
